Pizza...What's the deal?  What's your favorite Pizza Place?

OK, so what's the deal with "Good Pizza?  You just can't find a good pizza place away from home.  I guess this is such a personal selection that it is difficult for everyone or anyone to agree.

Anyway,  being from the northeast, we like a thin crust, well done pizza.   Some like a deep dish, thick, Chicago style pizza.  Some like a lot of cheese, some like to fold the slice.

Service was excellent. Food was well prepared and well presented. Doris had the Salmon, I had the NY Strip Steak.
Doris loved her meal. Broccoli was a bid hard but that's just the way some people like to prepare it.
Garlic mashed potatoes were excellent.
My steak was a bit tough. Well flavored but just a little bit tough to chew and to cut.

With steak, I always compare places to Ruth's Chris Steak house. To me, they are the standard of excellence. This steak, a NY Strip Steak would have cost about $40 at Ruth's. Here is was only $25. Ruth's you can cut their meat with a fork. Here the steak knife was having a tough time getting through. Tasty but tough. Some people like it that way.

Home made bread was very good. All in all a very good experience.

We will return to try out the fillet.

Comments:

We found this place in Vilano Beach on Saturday Feb7, 2015.

It’s in the little downtown section of Vilano Beach.  Go over the bridge, make a right at the light, then another right and it’s down on the left.

Nice looking place with plenty of free parking on the street out front.

Prices were a bit high but the service and food were excellent.

I had the Chicken Franchese  $18.95  which I usually order to compare Italian restaurants. It was very good.  Not as good as some others ( Romano’s ) in the area.  My wife had the Flounder. Excellent.

Bread was some of the best we’ve had.

The waitress we had seemed a bit new to the business but her lack of experience was made up by all the other members of the staff that were giving us constant attention. We must have had 4 members of the staff as well as the owner ask us how are meal was going.  A nice touch.

One down side was the person welcoming you in at the front door could have been better. Let’s say he could have been dressed nicer to welcome and seat his guests.  For the prices charged, he should have been presented better.

Very gracious as I think he was an owner but he could have dressed up a bit.

The prices charged indicated a fine restaurant but the place was very relaxed and  “Beachy.” I’m OK with that.

They also do not take credit cards.  Cash, Checks, or debit cards only.

That is being very picky but it is the only down side I could find with this restaurant. Everything else was very good.

This is definitely a good Italian restaurant which we always need in our area.  We will be back.

Hi Everyone,

In our quest to find good local restaurants, Lynn and I have found one.

It is called Bellini’s.  It is on SR 210, in the same place that “Nonna’s” Italian Restaurant was.  Of course this one is an Italian restaurant also.  The owner George Sakoo has been an owner/chef of many restaurants in the Jacksonville area.  Most notably “Vito’s” on the Landing in Jacksonville, where he cooked his Italian fare for over 16 years.

I had the Spaghetti Carbonara the other night and it was great!  Friends of mine have had the Veal Parmesan and said it was excellent, and the serving was enough for two meals!

The restaurant is only open for dinner.  Here are the address and phone number, and website info.

George is a personal friend of Lynn and I.  So if you give the restaurant a try, say hi to George, and tell him we sent you!  He just may buy you a glass of wine!

At the corner of CR312 and US 1 this is our newest Mexican place to eat.

First impression came from the parking lot. What a disaster! getting in and out of that place can be dangerous. Show caution going in and out of there. The driveway can cause head on collisions.

The food was better than OK. Our Margarita's were excellent.

Our waiter was Excellent. Very prompt and knew his menu well.

All in all a very good experience and we will be back.
The menu was pretty much the same as many other restaurants of this genre'.
Choose what you like in the other establishments and make your comparisons. Nothing really special in our dishes. Tacos, enchiladas, tostadas. Cooked well...just nothing special.

We will be back.

Returned 12/2016  Food was very good. Margarita's still EXCELLENT! One of the better Mexican restaurants around!   Parking still an issue but we parked in the Barnes and Noble lot.

Finally! A GREAT Italian Restaurant in St Augustine!

This is a family owned restaurant with Italian and northern New Jersey influences.
Probably the best Italian food in the area.
The Chicken Francese was outstanding.  It came served with or over pasta. One of the choices of Pasta was cheese tortellini so I went for it.  FANTASTIC!!
My wife, Doris chose the Grouper special.  again...FANTASTIC. Full wine list and bar.  Pizza is also one of their specialties.
Service was excellent. Pricing was very fair.

All the meals around us were being raved about.
You feel like you are eating back in Fort Lee, NJ.

If you like good authentic Italian food...you've got to try this place.

My wife and I have been to this large Italian restaurant chain several times now and have not been disappointed at any time.
Located up at the St John’s Town Center in Jacksonville it is a bit of a drive to get there for us here in WGV but my wife is up there shopping all the time anyway.

The staff are always familiar with the items on the menu and are always very helpful in making any decisions.
The food is always good and well presented.  I cannot find anything bad about this place.

This trip I ordered the Sausage Peperonata Pomodoro - Spaghettini tossed with fennel sausage, peppers, tomatoes, garlic and Reggiano.  Excellent!.
My wife Doris ordered the Mediterranean Shrimp.  Wonderful!  Grilled  jumbo shrimp on a bed of orzo and farro pilaf, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, spinach, feta and pesto vinaigrette.  Excellent!

Our meal started with the Lobster Bisque. Very nice.  Neither of us drink so I can’t comment on the wine list although it did take up the entire back page of the menu. They also have a full bar available.

Our Dessert was the Milk Chocolate Caramel Cake - A decadent chocolate cake, layered with milk chocolate ganache, caramel, rich chocolate frosting and vanilla whipped cream…Oy!

The only negative I can find with this place is not with the food but with the acoustics. It is a wide open large open room so it does seem a bit loud. Other than that the place is perfect.

Try it. I highly recommend this upscale Italian restaurant.

First time at this place and it was a winner. Specializes in fresh seafood with an artist / Fly Fishing Resort / Art Gallery theme to it.
Excellent food. In fact everything about this place was great. Service was impeccable. Full service bar with an extensive wine list. Entree's are fair priced and well presented. Servers know their menu and can make recommendations for you. This place specializes in fresh seafood.  All at our party raved about the food. Will definitely be back to this place.

I had the seafood chowder to start off with which was wonderful. I then had a shrimp and linguini entre which was excellent. My wife Doris had the Lobster Mac & Cheese...again...wonderful!

Don't pass up on the Dessert menu!! Leave some room for dessert!

It is in the old Zhanras location just on the other side of the Bridge of Lions.

It is now one of our favorite places to eat in St Augustine. Give it a try!

Excellent fresh bread served with assortment of flavored olive oils, eggplant rolantini appetizer is amazing! Fish was fresh and perfectly cooked and presented, filet mignon perfect! Many healthy, fresh choices. Service was excellent and friendly and helpful with recommendations. Atmosphere very pleasant. Didn't really explore the wine list, had one of the house cabernets and it was very good. Have attended the breakfast buffets as well and it is fantastic with more than enough choices, including made to order omelets. Too many items to review on the buffet but needless to say that you wont be disappointed!

This is a great little upscale cafe'/Bistro restaurant. Our waitress was good and knew the menu very well. The outdoor atmosphere on their patio was lovely.  Well shaded and very comfortable.
I had the local shrimp pasta which was very good.
My wife Doris had a grilled four cheese sandwich. again, very good.
The menu had several items we both would like to try including some of the Flatbread Pizza, Mahi Tacos and their salads and wraps.  The signature crab cakes is the one we will try next.

Margaritas were only $4.50 and quite good.

All in all a nice little place.
Wine list and dessert menu were a bit weak but it's the great atmosphere that is really the attraction here.  I would recommend this place.
I'll be back.

Restaurant is an old whitewashed southern-style house w/confederate jasmine draped front porches & white picket fence with a marsh side deck nestled among magnolia trees beside one of St. Augustine's oldest boatyards on Gonzales Creek off the intracoastal waterway.

The emphasis is on "plank cooking" which is baking fish, chicken or steak on a 1" thick oak plank, which seals in the juices & imparts a subtle wood flavor to the meat.

It is closed Mondays & has live bands on the deck Thursday-Sunday Nights along side a fire pit.  2 for 1 drinks offered 5-7 pm Sun-Thursday.  Sister restaurant to Cowboys.

We started with oyster creekside, which I saw another customer having, which was baked oysters marinated in herb butter, garlic, covered w/melted cheese & topped w/seasoned breadcrumbs. Delicious!  I had the Mahi on 1" plank (other fish available), which had a delicate mustard spread &
choice of 2 side dishes.  Excellent!

My husband had the grilled margarita Mahi basted with key lime &
tequila butter.  Also excellent!!

Casual place, nestled next to Home Depot, believe it or not.

Chosen by Jacksonville Magazine as one of St. Augustine's 5 top restaurants. 19 years young.

Wow, what a unique place this is! Food is great.  Service is great.  This looks to be a two person operation...only open three days a week...Friday Saturday and Sunday. A really friendly atmosphere.

When first entering the place, you feel like you are walking into your neighbor's dining room . Situated in an odd area of St Augustine, this place offers great food at a great price with an impromptu dinner show.  Our waitress, Judy, in the middle of our meals would burst into song and start singing along to some Karaoke machine.  She was wonderful!  Very entertaining! And she could sing!

Really good food for a great price as well.  CASH ONLY here!  No credit cards accepted. Reservations are a MUST!  They only seat about 20 people at a time.  This place gets crowded quickly.

I had one of the daily specials of the NY Strip steak.  My wife Doris had the Grouper Special.  Each meal came with potatoes, vegetables, a soup and a salad for $20.00. What a value! The presentation was superb and...it was great food!

The soup we had was the She Crab soup. Excellent!  Our friends Terry and his wife Katie had the black bean soup.  Both were excellent!  For dessert, Doris had the bread pudding and I had the tiramisu.

Plenty of parking although this location is not in the best area of the town.

Bring your own wine!

All in all a great, friendly dining experience with one hell of a dinner show.  By the end of the evening everyone in the place was singing along to so great old rock and roll  and country music.

We will definitely go back.

Let us know what you think about this place!

Rhett’s is an up-scale Piano Bar and restaurant. Live piano music is there most of the time.

A "Gone with the Wind" theme restaurant but a lot more upscale than Scarlet O'Hara's next door.

The food is very good. One of the more classier places in St Augustine.

I had the Chicken Meuniere which was excellent. It consisted of natural chicken breast wrapped in Serrano ham with basil pine nut pesto served with purple Peruvian potatoes, topped with smoked gouda Mornay sauce and her infused oil. $19.

My wife Doris had the Loch Duart Salmon Salad Again…Excellent  $18.  They have an extensive wine list and great desserts.  The Lobster Bisque was the best ever!

We sat downstairs with the piano bar.  For dinner, the piano is a little too load but for atmosphere it was great. It kept us entertained all evening.  They have dining rooms upstairs that consists of two rooms set up with a number of dining tables.  You can still hear the live music from up there but I think the downstairs dining is much more interesting.

It is dark in the piano room but that just ads to the atmosphere.   The menus light up when you open them giving a great presentation of the available entrées. It is a bit pricey but you do get a great dining experience.  We got out of there for $85 with drinks, two entrées and two appetizers with one dessert.  I would definitely go back.

Located in the former Hooters building the restaurant is redone in a casual contemporary beachy theme. The chef is well trained and focuses on local fresh seafood and killer chops and steaks. The sides are creative plus there are the old standbys. The shrimp appetizer was spicy and great the crab cakes the best I have ever had. Fresh flounder and grouper and great salads were on the menu as well as huge bowls of pasta creations. The menu changes and things that are fresh are featured. Only negative is that it does get noisy and the restaurant is getting known so it is full of happy diners. Portions are good and the some of the entrees are easily enough for two.

We went to this place for my wife's birthday.  The restaurant is located in a large shopping mall area near the Marriot Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra so there is plenty of parking. The service was excellent and very attentive. Food presentation was great. I had the Fried Boneless Pork Chops with their "Famous Mac & Cheese" and mashed potatoes $19.  Excellent! My wife Doris had the Grouper served with a Brown Butter Garlic  $21 and our friend Taffy had the Grouper as well but she had it served with the Shiitake Mushroom & Blue crab. $26. They will fix any of the fish they offer with any number of presentations.  Salads were fresh and the bread was excellent. We started off with a cup of seafood chowder which was out of this world. I also ordered an appetizer of  Coconut Fresh Mayport Shrimp $9. Excellent! Taffy had the Pasta Faggoili which was very different from any other style we had before but also wonderful.  For desert we split a key lime pie , again...wonderful.  Overall a great dining experience worthy of a repeat visit.  Fine dining at a great price. All of us highly recommend this restaurant.

They do take reservations and they also take them on line by clicking on the following link :  Reservations!

Casual place with reasonable prices.  If you like fried shrimp, this is the place to go.  The batter is light, and delicious.  The vegetables are home grown.  And there is a woman who brings in home made pies on Thursday which are great.....coconut cream or banana.  You have to ask, if available.  This is a small place, so expect a wait outside if you go at a peak time.  And parking is limited.  No liquor, but Worth the trip!!

We've been to the Sushi Bistro several times. First, it's very convenient in the same center as the Publix on 16. The food is always good, the portions are excellent and it's priced very well. They have great lunch specials that are downright cheap. The menu has more than just sushi and sashimi. There are more traditional items such as a chicken teriyaki which is way more than you can eat. The staff is always courteous, gracious and efficient. I highly recommend this restaurant for a short drive, a great meal at a fair price.

We rented a boat and thought we'd see how their "Dock and Dine" facilities worked out.  Docking was fine.  Very close to the restaurant but make sure you bring plenty of fenders as the wakes from the boats passing by will bang your boat around a bit. The pier to tie up your boat had room for about three boats.  Not a lot. But...it was very close by and you could look out the window and watch your boat.
This place has gotten several bad reviews for the service on other sites primarily due to the service and pricing.
We had a great experience.  I even went in there looking for things to complain about but everything was very good.
Our waitress and hostess were very polite and new their menus very well.
I started out with the New England Clam chowder which was great!

Our Friends, Greg and Taffy tried the Crab, Avocado and Mango Stack Which consisted of...
Jumbo lump crabmeat tossed in remoulade over layers of fresh avocado and mango Wonderful!  Enough to feed all of us!

Doris got the Shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and I got the Prime rib.  Both were excellent.

Greg also got the Prime Rib and Taffy ordered the Herb Crusted Salmon
With garlic mashed potatoes and pommery mustard sauce.  Excellent again!  Both Greg and I were well satisfied with the prime rib.

For dessert...Oh Boy!...We ordered the ...Hot Chocolate Lava Cake Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, molten center, Dreyer’s® vanilla ice cream, served with warm chocolate sauce and Heath Bar Crunch.  Oy!  You have to order this one ahead of time as they need 30 minutes to set it up!  It's worth it.  One time anyway!

Prices were a little steep but we expected that. The salad bar offered was $15.99.  Ruby Tuesdays might charge $7.99 for the same salad bar but they are not situated on the banks of the St. Johns in downtown Jacksonville.
Most entree's were between $19.99 and $34.99.  A bit pricey but again, very good quality and quantity.

So...I have to say, for that special night out...this place is a great place to eat!

Rose Marie and I had an early dinner. Bistro de Leon opens at 5:30 and our reservation was for 5:30. At that early time, reservations are not needed, but around 6:00 p.m., this small restaurant fills up quickly. By 6:30 p.m., they were turning away walk-ins and the restaurant was getting packed. The restaurant consists of a narrow room with tables to the right and a large refrigerated case to the left. The case contains the dessert selections and other items sold during the breakfast and lunch hours. Past the case are more tables on the right and left, which yield a seating capacity of about 45. The service is shared by the entire staff, with the owner (madam) frequently visiting the table to serve items or see if we needed anything. The wine list is not extensive and is naturally weighted toward French wines, but the prices were not the usual excessive amount we see in some restaurants. Do not eat here if you are in a hurry because the restaurant gives you time to enjoy each course while taking in the atmosphere of this busy place.

Rose Marie had the best Kir (creme de cassis and white wine) she ever had (called Kir Chardonnay on the menu) and I had the French beer. As soon as the appetizer order went in, they served a basket of fresh French bread and butter. The bread was wonderful, with a crunchy crust and tasty interior. And they keep serving more bread until you cry "uncle." To start, Rose Marie had the spring mix salad and I had the lobster ravioli and both were wonderful. After the appetizers, they served an amuse-bouche consisting of a small serving of delicious potato soup. For the main course, Rose Marie ordered the grilled salmon steak with béarnaise sauce, vegetables and rice. I had the risotto of shrimp, scallops, and fish in a porcini creamy sauce. These dishes were expertly prepared, exquisitely presented, and best of all, tasty. We had to skip dessert because we were too full, but the dessert case is crammed full of yummy looking fruit torts, cheesecake, and other delights.

As noted, the pace of service is leisurely and enjoyable. Only the server who was hired a week ago seemed not to be fully informed on the menu, but she had plenty of nearby help to answer questions.

This is a restaurant to visit again. Exceptionally prepared fresh food, attentive service, and fair prices might make it our favorite. The menu on their web site is not up to date, which means they change it as available ingredients change. That is a good thing.

We took the advice of a good friend, Al LeBeau, and ate lunch at Bistro de Leon, across from Founder's Square in ST. Augustine. Al's grandson, Alex, a Flagler student, works at the Bistro. Marge and I both had the Lyon's Onion soup, baked with caramelized croutons and Swiss cheese...the best we've ever had and we have lived in Europe and visited Paris several times. Marge had another appetizer, the Empanadas, which were tasty but a little too much pastry. I had their specialty Fish "Quenelle" soufflé, crab meat and fish baked in a Lobster Bisque. It was absolutely delicious, very light and wonderful flavor. The next time, we're having their Bouillabaisse. Chef Poinard is a 5th generation chef and he and his wife do all the cooking...fresh. The service is excellent and friendly. You must give Bistro de Leon a try; you will be very pleased.

This is one of the up-scale restaurants up at the St Johns Town Center.  Very nice.  Service was perfect.  The waitress know her menu and recommended some perfect selections for us.

I had the Parmesan Crusted Chicken Angel hair pasta with herb garlic butter, lemon pan jus, fresh tomato-basil relish 15.50. Wow!  The Best Ever!  Loved it!
My wife Doris had the Blackened Salmon Spinach Salad Georgia pecans, red onion, Granny Smith apples, gorgonzola cheese  14.95.  Absolutely LOVED IT!
Everyone at our table...8 of us...all loved their meal and the entire dining experience.  The Lobster Bisque was great.
Prices of entree's range from  $15 to $27.
For dessert we had the 7 layer carrot cake for $6.95 that all 8 of us shared and still took some of it home!  Again, it was wonderful!

My wife and I do not drink a lot so we got out of there for about $50.00.  Wine or drinks would naturally run the tab up a bit.

They do take reservations and at times with all the restaurants in this quadrant of St Johns Town Center do get crowded.

I would highly recommend this place for any special evening or a great lunch!  The Best!

This is a Japanese Steak House located on CR 312 in the Publix shopping center. They put on the typical show which was quite entertaining. The service was a little slow as they were quite crowded but all in all it was worth the wait.

The Chef comes out and does his routine of throwing things in the air, twirling eggs on a spatula, and shooting flames in the air off the grille.
Dinners are prepared right in front of you and range from Shrimp and Chicken to Steak and Chicken to Shrimp and Scallops and a host of other classic Japanese choices.  Sushi is also served. Dinners range in price from $12 to $30 and you do get a lot of food for the money.

I had the Fillet and Shrimp which was great.  Very Tender meat. My wife Doris had the Shrimp and Scallops.  Also Great!

Great place to go for that "Special Occasion."  A little too pricey for everyday visits. On the scale of a Ruth's Chris or Morton's Steak House.  Excellent service. If you go there and make a reservation, tell them its your birthday and you will get a free photo of your party and a free dessert.
They have been voted the "Best Wine Selection" by Wine Digest magazine.  Their wine list is two pages long.  They are very proud of their wine list.
The food was great. I had the "Bone-in Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin" with Shallot Butter.  The steak was good but not as tender as Ruth's Chris. It also had a seam of grizzle running through it which could not be eaten.

My wife had one of their side dishes for a meal...Lobster Mac-N-Cheese. Wow!  That was great! The service here is outstanding. The food presentation was excellent.  Everything about this place is great.  I just didn't think their "Dry Aged Steak" was as tasty or as tender as other famous steak houses around. The soups were wonderful.  I had the New England Clam Chowder and my wife Doris had the Lobster Bisque.  Both were very good.

The prices were a bit high as well.  Everything is Ala Cart. Steaks range from $36 to $45.  Soups around $8.  Expect a meal for a party of two without drinks to be about $120.00.

Open since November 2009, III Forks is the latest upscale steakhouse to come to Jacksonville. The original is in Dallas, TX. Far from Texas steakhouse decor, III Forks has a distinctly modern feel, including the longitudinal fireplace and the glass enclosed wine cellar.

First, the downside: prices for wine and the a la carte food items are at the Morton's and Ruth's Chris atmospheric levels. That said, the food was excellent, featuring prime cuts of meat. Rose Marie started with the Caesar salad and I had bacon-wrapped scallops, both of which were well prepared and presented. The bread served with the appetizers was also excellent, with a crunchy crust and chewy center. The main course for both of us was the filet, with one cooked medium rare (correctly) and one cooked medium (slightly underdone). For sides we shared the sautéed mushrooms and the six cheese potatoes. Both were excellent. These au gratin potatoes have six Italian cheeses. We did not have dessert, but saw a huge slice of chocolate cake go by for another table that looked delicious.

We noticed a few lapses in service, despite the attentiveness of the server and the visits by the sommelier and the manager. First, instead of being served drinks, bread, then appetizers, we got appetizers, then drinks, finally bread. Second, we ordered the Caesar salad with anchovies in lieu of red peppers but the red peppers were served with the anchovies anyway. Third, no dessert menu was presented; the server just recited several from memory but we had the feeling that the list was not complete.

In summary, for a new restaurant, III Forks is a good place to go for a special occasion or when the urge for prime steaks becomes overpowering. The minor service issues will no doubt be corrected with a little time and the food, ambiance, and eager wait staff far outweigh the minor glitches.

My wife Doris and I went there for our anniversary.
A special occasion.  In fact when we made the reservation they ask "Is this a special occasion?" Many places offer you a free dessert or something like that for a special occasion.
Anyway the food was great.  Service wonderful.  I had the 8 oz Fillet $31.95 and Doris had one of the specials..."Catch of the Day - Wahoo." $28.95.  Excellent. My fillet was very tender but they cook their steaks a bit on the rare side.  Ask for things a little more cooked than usual. It was still great.
If there is something to complain about, you have to look pretty hard to find it.

This place is right up there with the best of the steakhouses.

One thing bothered me though...our waiter offered me a choice of two sauces for my steak.  He never mentioned that there was a charge of $11.95 for either of the sauces.  There was no mention of this charge on the menu either.  I chose the Hollandaise sauce which I thought, "OK, I'll try that."  Ouch!  Who charges extra for a sauce?  It was good but, come on!

Now my $31.95  8oz steak just cost me $43.90.  Ouch again!!
Not pleased about that.

The place is good but watch out for those kind of surprises. I guess I should have asked but who charges for a sauce?! And...who likes to ask about the price of each thing they are offer?
They offer a great assortments of wine with all the bottles on display as you walk in the front door.

Desserts are excellent.  We had the bread pudding. Excellent!
There is plenty of parking in the little shopping area around the restaurant although it is a bit of a maze to get out of their parking lot.

Oh yeah...For our "Special Occasion" that they asked about...Nothing!  Not even a toast of champagne or anything.  For my wife's birthday the Capital Grille gave us a free dessert, they took our photo at our table and presented it in a nice frame...you know...something special to remember the occasion.  Something that makes you want to go back to that restaurant.  Get it?

This is a great place to get a sandwich.  The food is good and reasonably priced. Their Philly Cheese steak was very good and tasty. Their cold cuts seem fresh.  I would recommend this place if you are in the mood for a sandwich.  The only complaint I might have is that the service is a little slow.  It takes a while to get your food.  Be prepared to wait about ten minutes for your food. King and bear restaurant – Champions Grille
Recently the King and Bear restaurant has begun offering their Friday Night dinners and Happy Hour specials again.  They offered this several years ago and everyone thought it was great.  They offer wonderful food, a close proximity for us living in World Golf Village, and reasonable prices. Their Happy Hour drink prices run from 4 pm to 7pm and the dinner service runs from 5 pm to 7 pm Fridays only.

Let me tell you the food is great.  Most of their entree’s cost $9.95 and drinks are two for one.  Last week they had a meatloaf special that was wonderful.  Maybe the best meatloaf I’ve ever had. This week I had the Chicken Schnitzel served with tri-colored roasted potatoes and sugar snap peas..  Again…outstanding.
Other featured meals were Sliced Roast Sirloin, Pub Style Fish and Chips, Fried Shrimp Burgers, Wings, etc.

Service is good but often understaffed. Drinks are good and the atmosphere here is wonderful.
Desserts are an assortment of cheesecakes that are also very good.  The dessert portions are small but it’s probably best left that way.

It’s best to get there early as their tables fill up.

I would highly recommend you spend Friday evenings at the King and Bear Clubhouse and join your neighbors for the Happy Hours and their Dinner Specials.  A great place to run into and meet your neighbors.  We’re all here!

They are also open for breakfast and lunch menus but the review here is for their Friday Nights Happy Hours and Diners.  (They do offer a very good breakfast & Lunch menu)

Friday nights specials are open to the public and not just for members of the golf club.

They tell me as long as we keep giving them business they will continue having these Friday Night Diners.

1/15/2011  Things have changed a bit at this grille.  They seem a bit understaffed on Friday evenings.  Some meals take longer than expected, some were missing altogether. Food is not quite the same.  Still good and priced right.

This is a very nice restaurant overlooking a marina across the Lions Bridge in St Augustine.  The food is good but it is the atmosphere that really makes this restaurant something special.  Outdoor dining in the raised table huts is really nice. The Caribbean flair of the menu is also a nice touch. Drink specials and dessert specials are wonderful. Shrimp and seafood items are the main thrust of the menu but occasionally they feature a prime rib special that is great. The menu is a little pricey but this is a place is worth the visit.  Ask to sit in one of the outdoor palapas.

10/2010 -  Overall good dining experience but the atmosphere is the best thing here. Great views of the marina. The individual dining palapas are a wonderful touch.  The menu needs an upgrade.

This is a good outdoor dining place overlooking the marina and the Vilano Bridge.  I usually have one of the wraps.  The fajita wrap with shrimp or chicken for $8 is pretty good. This time I had the Sirloin, Bacon and Cheese sandwich for $9. It was a bit dry.  My wife, Doris had the Caesar wrap with shrimp. $9.  Our waiter forgot our soup and did not offer any of the specials that some of the other waiters offered. The entrees are a bit pricey $19 - $29.

Sometimes bugs can be a problem dining outdoors here but we did see other waiters offering bug spray to their customers.  Our waiter said they had no bug spray. I would still recommend the Kingfish Grill as we love the outdoor dining area here.

This was our first time at this restaurant. It was recommended by our friend Karen form the fitness center. She claimed it was her favorite restaurant in the area.  A bit far to drive but we had to check it out.
Great Restaurant!!  It is now one of our favorite restaurants.  It is well worth the scenic ride down A1A .  If you are in a hurry, take RT 95 but if you have the chance, take the scenic route along the ocean.  It’s a great ride.  It's 12 blocks south of the fishing pier.

Anyway, back to the restaurant...  I must admit we have ridden past this place dozens of times and never knew there was a restaurant there at all. They are situated overlooking the ocean with indoor and outdoor seating.  Very nice.  Inside it is a museum of old collectable toy cars, trains, and whatever. We ate out on the porch overlooking the ocean. Very Nice.

Now for the food.  The bread was home baked and excellent.  The wine list is extensive. The appetizers are wonderful. For the Entrees I had the Parmesan Crusted Double Cut Pork Chop which was three inches thick.   $19.  One of the best pork chops I have ever had. Cooked to perfection without overcooking and drying it out.  My wife Doris had the Wasabi Horseradish Honey Crusted Salmon. $19.  One of the best Salmon dishes she has ever had.  Each diner comes with salad/Caesar salad or soup.  The Dessert menu was extensive. We had the white chocolate, raspberry cheesecake with strawberries.  Oy!!  Out of this world.  You have got to try this.

The place is reasonably priced as the two of us got out of there for $51.00 but ... that was without alcoholic drinks.  Those of you who have a couple of drinks at dinner will pay a bit more.

You can view their menu online by clicking on the following link:  www.flagleronline.com/blue

Great restaurant.  I would highly recommend this place. Let me know if you agree.

We went back to this restaurant because of a coupon obtained through www.restaurant.com.  They offered a $25 gift certificate for $4. A great deal.  Try it!  It works!

Acoustics in room made it very laud and difficult to talk.

It was crowded and food to quite a while to get to our table. We were OK with that but our Salads didn't come to us until after the main entree'. That seemed odd.  No bread served here.

Other wise the food was terrific.   Dessert of Bread Pudding was excellent!

Will definitely return to this restaurant.

I still give it 4 stars

A great seafood place.  A bit out of the way but well worth the drive. Take the CR210 bridge over the Intracoastal waterway, make a sharp right and go under the bridge like you are going up to Barbara Jeans or Lulu's.  The place is on the left just before Lulu's.
Serving lunch and dinner this is probably one of the premiere seafood restaurants in our area. It also features a Southern style to the cooking with many dishes coming with a side of Grits, Conch Fritters or Collard Greens.
I had the Fried Shrimp Platter that was big enough to take half home.  The shrimp was fresh, tender and cooked to perfection. Excellent!  My wife Doris had the Grilled Salmon with Steamed Spinach and New Potatoes.  Again...Excellent.
Fresh seafood is on display as the catch comes in.

Casa Monica Hotel downtown St. Augustine    (904) 810-6810

95 Cordova St. St. Augustine, FL 32084

Chas Stamm 7/2009

This is one of the more up-scale restaurants in St. Augustine. It is also in one of the more historic buildings in all of St. Augustine as well. Actually I think it is the oldest hotel in the United States. They call their restaurant 95 Cordova.  I assume that refers to their address.  The restaurant features New World, Middle Eastern and Asian flavors.

A place that you might not go every day, but for that special occasion, it is great.  This would be a really nice place to go to for a birthday, anniversary, and perhaps some special guests coming to stay with you.

It is a bit pricey but well worth the experience.  Right away you feel the ambiance of a lavishly decorated establishment.  When you walk into the place and see all the extravagant decorations, I immediately think of “Who’s paying for all this?” Chandeliers, silk curtains, ornate tables and chairs and all the rest. The menus are a nice surprise. When opened they are backlit for easy reading in a dark atmosphere.  A really nice touch.

Service is impeccable. All the food excellent and well presented.  I chose the 7oz fillet with mashed potatoes. The steak was $22, the potatoes were $4. Most things on the menu are ala cart.  The Caesar Salad I ordered was a nice surprise of romaine lettuce with a touch of chilled salmon, some sort of crispy chip and several sauces. Very nice at $8 but you can see how things are adding up. This is how they are paying for the fancy curtains. I’m already at $32 and I have not had anything to drink yet.

My wife, Doris had the AHI TUNA WITH THAI PEANUT SAUCE with lo mein noodles, wakami, abc soy, sweet chili sauce.  That was $28.  There was not a drop of food left on her plate.  Again, it was excellent.  For dessert we shared a Key Lime pie that was the best we’ve had in a very long time.

Art Niosi of Royal Pines tells me the Chilean Sea Bass is the best around.  We will have to try that the next time we go.

An extensive wine list is featured as well.

The menu changes seasonally so what you have one time may not appear the next time you go.

You can call for reservations or sign up for reservations on line. A nice feature.

You should try this restaurant as it is one of the best St. Augustine has to offer.

Maggiano's     Little Italy

Charles Stamm  7/2009  Chas' Favorite!

Great Place!  Really good food and huge portions.  This place is right in the center of the St John's Town Center.  A Big Place.  Prices are reasonable and the help is superb.  This place reminded me of Mulberry Street down in lower Manhattan. The old photos on the wall, the decorations, the lighting, everything all the way down to the background music and the red checkered table cloths.  All these coupled with some great food and you have one heck of an Italian dinner experience.

I love spaghetti and meatballs.  I also love Italian sausage. I have to try the Italian sausage and the meatballs in just about every Italian restaurant I go in. That is my standard of comparison.  My wife uses the Eggplant Parmesan. I have to say that this was one of the best spaghetti and meatballs dinner I have had in a real long time.  I ordered it with the Italian sausage.  The marinara sauce was excellent and the meatballs and sausage were great.  The $12.50 price for a small portion was plenty big enough for me to take half the meal home for a second dinner.

My wife had the Eggplant parm and I asked her on a scale of one to ten what she would give it and she gave it a 9.  I give the spaghetti a 10.  The food was great.  The help was also very attentive.

They offer a full bar along with an extensive wine list.

If you have room...an extensive Dessert menu ranges from Crème Brulee to home made pastries to NY Style Cheesecake to Tiramisu to everything in between.

It does get crowded up at the St John's Town center but this place does accommodate a lot of customers and they do take reservations.  Both of us would highly recommend this place.

My new "Favorite Place!"

They have a very good web site that includes a lot of info on their establishment.

J. Alexander's  Restaurant     Chas Stamm      March 2009

St. John's Town Center  904-996-7147

This is an upscale contemporary American restaurant placing a special emphasis on food quality and professional service. A national chain of restaurants.  Four of us went to this eatery and everyone was impressed.  A call ahead feature really put us to the head of an hour long wait.  It's best to call ahead.  904-996-7147.

For starters we tried the "Colossal Buttermilk Onion Rings."  Wow!  A tree of huge stacked onion rings that stood a foot high.  They were great! My wife, Doris had the Veggie Burger of a lifetime.  "The best ever!" It was huge! I had the Rattlesnake Pasta with southwestern spices, peppers and chicken.  It was prepared perfectly and plenty of it. $14.  For dessert we shared one of the best pieces of Carrot Cake we have ever had.  It was brought out warm with a nice cream cheese icing.  Excellent!  $6  Well worth it! All desserts are made in the restaurant and not store bought or shipped in.  Mike and Marlene Bailey swear they have some of the best "Baby Back Barbeque Ribs on the planet.  Next time I have to give them a try.

Mike had their Chili and Iron Skillet Cornbread that was out of this world!

They feature an extensive wine list along with a number of handcrafted premium martinis. The service for our table was handled by what seemed to be a staff of 4 who attended to our every wish but not overbearing. The presentation of the food was excellent.

Rating --*****   Excellent!   A great place to have dinner.

Sunset Grille  Chas Stamm  March 2009

421 A1A Beach Blvd  St Augustine FL 32082

This eatery will remind you of the style of restaurants of Key West. It has sort of a lay back attitude specializing in wings, Burgers, shrimp and chowder.

I'll say this, they have some of the best wings in all of St. Augustine.  They get them shipped in from Purdue Chicken and they are big. The burgers are big as well.  They offer a burger they call their "Paradise Burger."  This is big and fashioned off of the famous Jimmy Buffet Song.  It's a great burger.  They have also won many awards for their Chowder in the Great St. Augustine Chowder Debate for 11 years now.

Also featured are some great salads.  Big salads with plenty of choices. The Sunset Shrimp and scallops is also a favorite among the locals.  $15.99

A favorite hang out for many of the "Bikers" coming through the area.  One tip for the bikers...Don't park in front of the restaurant where they reserve parking for you.  The cars parked in the angled spot will back into your bikes!  They invite bikers to park there but it is a BAD area to park your bike. They share the area with cars and vans and there is very little room for the cars to back out without hitting the bikes.  You will get hit by some old bastard not paying any attention!

Flavors Eatery  Chas Stamm  February 2009

125 Suite C  King Street  St. Augustine, FL  32084  824-4221

This is a sandwich shop that will surprise you.  Located next to Rembrantz in the Art Walk section of King Street near the Post office and College in the Old City. This is a great place to go for lunch.  Good food and huge portions.  My wife Doris had one of their specialty salads.  She got the small portion and that was huge.  Fresh and flavorful and a lot of surprises in it.  I got the Teriyaki Chicken Wrap. This was a bit of a surprise because the only thing that resembled a wrap here was the fact that the food was wrapped.  Other than that it resembled more of a Chimmichonga than a sandwich wrap.  This thing was huge and covered with salsa and salad and nacho chips.  It had so much going on you had to eat it with a knife and fork.  It was a wonderful surprise.  Not at all what I expected when I ordered a "Wrap" but it was very tasty, fresh and plenty of it.

They also feature Pitas, Pizza, Quesadillas, Nachos, Shakes and Smoothies.

The menu also offers an Atkins salad that features your choice of chicken, steak, tuna, or turkey with melted cheeses served over greens with onions, olives, tomato, cucumbers and more.

One of your neighbors, Pete Kavanagh who lives in Wildwood has become the new owner and head chef in the place.  I would say DEFINITELY give this place a try.  The food is very good and you will be pleasantly surprised as to the quality and quantity of the meals served here.

12/2008  I like the place.  We must have gone there twenty times over the past two years and although it has really nothing "Special" on the menu...I like several things and...they are certainly convenient.  ( - New Menu as of 3/2010 - many great things!  Try the flatbread Pizza!  It's Great! ) Having the Caddy Shack movie as it's theme, the menu is basically burgers, fries and wings.  OK, I know, they have lots of other items too.

My wife, being a vegetarian gets the quesadilla or a tuna sandwich.  You can also ask for a Veggie-Burger.  It's not on the menu but they do have it.

I think they have a great burger. And they have some great wings.  The Spaghetti and the Meatball is also one of my favorites.  For lunch...or after a round of golf I like the Sheboygan's own beer brat.  As you can see there is not much in the way of health food on this menu.  But wait!... they do have some pretty good salads listed... although... I have never tried one.  Oh yeah...the Nacho's will knock your socks off!

Terrible food for a health nut but...what the heck, once in a while...you just feel like a cheeseburger.

Now if they served some macaroni and cheese or a grilled cheese sandwich...Oy!.  You'd never get me out of there...And I'd be another 40 pounds heavier.

I still like the place!

The large screen TV's are a great plus during the football games and other sports events.  One thing they can improve on is their beer.  Being from the northeast part of the US, I like a cold beer with my burger.  Or my wings.  Or nachos!!  A cold beer preferably in a frosted mug.  The colder the better.  I can't get a cold beer at the Caddy Shack.  Nor can I get a frosted mug.  In fact, at times I get the beer in a plastic cup!  That will never do.  When they come to my table with a draft beer in a plastic cup...Nope...send it back.  Give me and iced tee instead thank you.

Anyway...I still think this is a great place.  Another thing in favor of this place is their deserts.  Try their Belgian Waffle.  It's terrific.  Big enough for two. Sometimes we are coming home from a movie and stop in to Caddy Shack just to split a Belgian Waffle.

Caps on the Water       Chas Stamm  December 2008

This is one of our favorite dining places in the St Augustine area.  Situated on the East side of the Intracoastal Waterway Caps offers an outstanding dining experience, particularly at sunset.

We got here at 5 pm which turned out perfect for sitting outside for the eventual sunset at around 6 pm ( December 26)

There is quite a lot of outdoor seating along the waters edge.  Huge oak trees growing up through the decks ads to the atmosphere. The outdoor seating section really makes this place.

They have two bar areas with one situate along the waters edge.

To start off, we tried the she crab soup.  Whenever we see She Crab Soup on the menu we have to try it.  This was good but Harry's in downtown St Augustine is till the best around.

For entrées', my wife had the Vanilla Grouper as did one of our friends on this trip...Horse Radish crusted grouper over whipped potatoes and fried spinach in a sweet vanilla rum sauce.$21.95  Both thought the dish was excellent.  I had the Chicken Florentine served over fettuccini which was also excellent.  Service was good and the waitress new her dishes well.  Another in our party got the St Augustine Shrimp ...Fifteen fried shrimp garnished with tomato salsa and two sides. $17.95. They loved it!

Plenty of local seafood dishes served here.  They also have an Oyster Bar.

To get there you take the Vilano Bridge and go north on A1A and turn left at the Castle.  go to the end and turn right and Caps is on the left.

Great selection of food, great atmosphere and a view that will knock your socks off. I highly recommend Caps on the Water. They do not take reservations and they do get crowded.  You may see a lot of cars in their parking lot but do not give up.  They have plenty of seating and can handle the crowds.

was ok for me, I wished I had gotten sauce with meat.  The service was great.
The price for the meal, drink and dessert was around $8.50.  They also gave
me a soda drink to go.  I will go there again to check out to see how their
sauce is w/meat.

4/2009  Charles Stamm

We came back to this place just to check out some of the negative reviews and the fact that they had a learning phase to get through our first time here.  I am happy to say that this time the food was pretty good. Service was much better as well.  The lasagna was good.  The sauce, I can see some thinking was bland.  To me it was not bland. Although I do not like a very spicy marinara sauce.

I like Nonna's restaurant but sometimes Nonna's sauce is too spicy for me.  Giovanni's was just fine for me.

I wish they would offer their Pizza in the dining room.  The best thing on the menu is their pizza and they do not offer it on the menu. They make a great pie but only offer a 10" Pizza in the dining room.  Not the same!

All in all I liked this place.  This was a good dining experience for me. Give them another try.

Cobblestones at the Creek     Pat Lanpher 10-2008

108 Julington Plaza Drive (east of San Jose/SR 13 about 2.5 miles behind Walgreen's). It opens at 4:00 p.m.   904-230-6744

We arrived early (5:30) but the restaurant was already busy. After we were seated and sat for a while, a waiter asked if we had been served, which was  unsettling, and made us think they were unorganized. But he explained that the restaurant was rated highly in the Jacksonville area (Top 25 in Jacksonville Magazine 2006-2007-2008) and had an extensive wine service. During the evening, the level of service, on a a scale of 1 (irritating aloofness to 10 (suffocating) was a 5.

The food menu contains a variety of appetizers, salads/soups, meat (beef and pork), seafood, and pasta. The prices seemed fairly upscale, with the beef items ranging between $21 and $28.

On the other side of the large menu was the wine list. The wine list was fairly extensive, but in our opinion priced rather highly. For example, a Kendall-Jackson Meritage was priced at $37 and we saw it at Winn-Dixie this week for $12. Also, for a restaurant that advertised itself (per the waiter) as emphasizing wine, it was surprising that the wines did not list the vintage.

They served warm, crunchy bread and olive oil immediately after the waiter noticed us. My wife ordered ice tea and I had a martini "straight up," which was served in a cocktail glass. I asked the waiter why and he replied that his male customers seemed to prefer that and he assumed I did as well.  Later on, I ordered a bottle of beer (they have no beer on tap) and the waiter asked if I wanted a glass, and I said yes. He brought the glass of beer, but they had poured the beer at the bar. I have never encountered that mode of service before.

We had the "Crispy Calamari" appetizer, which was not crispy, but the calamari was good, as were the marinara and pesto dipping sauces. The main problem with the dish, other than the seme-soggy calamari, was that we received three large squid "bodies" among the calamari rings that good fried calamari should consist of.

The salads that are included in the dinner were good. We both had the house salad, consisting mainly of romaine lettuce, slivers of carrots, and chopped tomatoes, celery, and cucumbers. With the dressing of our choice, it was good.

We both had pasta. I had Shrimp and Sausage Rigatoni in pesto sauce and my wife had Mushroom and Spinach Tortellini in Alfredo sauce. Both were very tasty. The one strange thing was that my entree was served in a noticeably cold plate, while my wife's plate was warm.

The dessert selection, which we passed, consisted of about 4 items verbally listed for us by the waiter.

Overall, our experience was uneven. The salad and entrees were good and that is the main reason to go to this restaurant. But other areas were strange (cold entree plate). We will probably return to see if the areas we didn't like were an aberration and to try other entrees to see if they are as good as ours were on this night.

Go to this restaurant for the entrees . Don't go to this restaurant for its wine reputation. Skip paying three times the retail price for wine from a wine list that does not list the vintage as that pricing is unfair to consumers. The restaurant occasionally offers 50% off a second entree through print advertising, although we forgot to take our coupon with us on this day.

2-2017  The new restaurant is just as great as the old place. They are back! You will love the food and the atmosphere!

This may turn out to be one of our favorite Italian restaurants of the area. The new Vito's is in the circle of shops and restaurants at 116 Bartram Oaks Walk. Suite 101 Fruit Cove, FL  32259

Great food. Great service and good prices. This is a local place.  Mostly locals going there because it is well away from the tourist areas.
We started off with some great home made garlic bread covered with cheese.  The Chicken Francese for $14.95 melted in your mouth.  My wife had the Eggplant Parmigiano with Pasta for $11.95 which was described as wonderful.  Our friends, Mike and Marlene Bailey had one of the Specialty Pizza's. They asked for a thin crust "with the crust being crispy on the bottom." They got it exactly that way.  I can tell you it was great.

The service...well they must have had four people coming around to our table at different times to ask if we had everything we wanted.  Just enough as to not be too much in our faces.  Very friendly and competent staff.

Our two dinners came to $35.00.  We were very pleased and will be back to try some of the other dishes.

They have a web site with their hours, menus and directions...

Old City House Inn & Restaurant       Turnberry resident  4-2008

115 Cordova Street, St. Augustine, Florida 32084

My husband and I ate here on a Monday evening.  The restaurant had parking available for it's customers (we love) only one other table was in the restaurant when we ate.   Our reservations were at 5:30 PM and we had drinks next door at the Casa Monica hotel.  The court-yard of this Inn is beautiful and the building outside is colorful and clean, located in the heart of downtown.  They have a limited selection of liquor at the bar.  I had the Stuffed Chicken - A tender breast of chicken stuffed with mozzarella and basil, lightly breaded, then baked golden brown.  Served over a Boursin cream sauce, with vegetable and starch du jour.($17.95)My husband had the Seafood Thai Curry - Jumbo shrimp and sea scallops are sautéed with caramelized onions, apples, scallions, and peppers in an authentic red curry coconut sauce.  Served with Jasmine rice.($21.95).  Entrees were served with a small salad and bread.  The food was acceptable and we finished our meals and were satisfied. My favorite was the pesto olive oil served with the bread. I was disappointed in the service and the inside atmosphere. The dinning room tables need a clean wipe and walls were not clean. The paper menu needed replaced.  I thought I was over reacting until another table arrived and had to wiped off the seat to sit down. Our server never asked how our dinners were after serving.  He said he had been working there for 10 years. I think that the food editors of these magazines need to continue to update their lists to determine if the quality of the restaurant can be maintain. This place continues to be rated year after year.  Maybe it was a bad night. Off to another restaurant!

This is a New Orleans style of restaurant right down on the water in the old city.  A nice place to go with company.  It is charming.  Sitting outside on the patio day or night is great.  Food is always good.  Daily special are always a good bet.  This day I had a meatloaf dish and my wife had a salmon dinner.  Both were off the special. Our friends had the trout.  All were great tasting, good looking, and all had a New Orleans flavor to them. This place has been here a long time. Try the "she crab" soup.  It is wonderful.

They usually have an acoustical musician on hand for background music as well. For dessert, try the Chocolate Bread Pudding.  For $5 you'll have a wonderful dessert that will comfortably feed four.

It gets a bit crowded so you may want to put your name on a call ahead list.

One of our Favorites!

Good Italian food served family style.   Good sized portions.  PLENTY OF FOOD. Four of us had salad and two small sized dinners and it was more food than we could eat. Tortelloni was very good.  Shrimp and Scallops Orso was equally as good.  The Apple Gorgonzola Salad fed all four of us even though we ordered the "Small" portion. Friendly staff which parade you through their maze of party rooms and the kitchen on the way to your table.  It was quite entertaining just to get to your table! They do take reservations.

We had breakfast at the cafe this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it!! I had the Wildflower omelet which has mushrooms spinach and chicken and my hubby had the Tuscany omelet which has Italian sausage and peppers in it. They were accompanied by home fries that were made from little red potatoes. Delicious! The service was excellent and we will be sure to visit again.

Nice quaint little place.  Great food. Had dinner there.   On Saturday evenings prime rib is the specialty of the house.  My wife had the salmon dish which she raved about.  I Had the prime rib which was excellent.   The menu of the place has a German or Bavarian flair to it.  I would give this place a try.  Very friendly atmosphere. Family owned business.

Update...8-2008

The Wildflower Cafe serves a great breakfast on Sunday mornings as well! I know the Oasis claims to be the best in St Augustine and I have been to both....Believe me the Wildflower is better.  And...you can sit outside and bring your dog! Very good food, bigger portions, similar pricing and not so much as a "Tourist" atmosphere. Mostly locals here.  Service is impeccable. Omelets, Eggs Benedict, Two plus Two specials are all big portions and great food.

If you go out for breakfast, treat yourself to the Wildflower Cafe.      Chas <'////><

My wife and I had a choice of going to Ruby Tuesday's for burgers or Benito's on SR210. Friends have raved about Benito's, so we went.  We made the wrong choice.

We started with the calamari appetizer. The calamari was chewy and the marinara sauce accompanying it was bland. I had the lobster ravioli special. It appeared that they prepared the ravioli with canned lobster put into a blender without spices. Hence the lobster fill had little lobster flavor and no flair. My wife had veal picatta. She is a veal picatta connoisseur. The veal was unevenly pounded so that parts of the meat were thin and other parts thicker; that is not typical veal picatta. The meat was a little chewy and the accompanying sauce was oily.

On the bright side, the salads were well prepared. The happy hour priced martini was good.

We hope this was an off evening at Benito's. Still, we will probably not return except perhaps for a happy hour (if we skip the bar food).

CR210 location:  It is so good to have Italian food served other than chicken parmigiana or eggplant or baked ziti (although I like all those very much!).  It's the other flavors I miss, like chicken francese and chicken marsala (they serve your choice of chicken or veal for most items).  They have a full menu with lots of delicious choices. They are also currently running a lunch special where you can taste most anything on the menu for $5.95 (dine-in only, not take out) at the CR 210 location, everyday 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  I've eaten at both CR210 and Phillips Hwy. locations; CR210 is closer, but they were both terrific.  One diner at Phillips Hwy said they go there a few times a week, so they just get one dinner and split it. You can easily do that, there is enough food on one dish, e.g., my Chicken Francese had two large chicken breasts over pasta with a salad and garlic rolls (or bread with butter).  They have all the baked dishes and fish dishes. I have not had the chance to check out the appetizers or desserts as yet, but they looked good.  You can go casual or dress up. The dinner special is a great way to try dishes you've not had before! You need to go to the link and read the dish descriptions on their menu, too many choices to list here.  This review is already on it's way to a novel.  Enjoy, I did!

I have to agree with Carol on this restaurant.  The new owners have done a great job here.  We went on a Thursday evening and they had live entertainment as well.  A solo guitar/singer that was excellent.  No too loud.  I had the Chicken Francese which was outstanding. My wife Doris tried the special...Shrimp Pot Pie."  Again...Outstanding. Prices are very reasonable. Plenty of parking. Full bar.  Service was very good and friendly.

On an earlier visit I asked them to prepare their Tortellini Ala Pana only use a Rosa sauce ( Half cream sauce and half marinara) and include a sliced Italian sausage with that.  Tortellini ala Charlie!  Wonderful!

Give this place a try.  It is well worth it!

We went on a Tuesday night, because I love German food & I was told that on Tuesdays they offer German food.  We all had the weinersnitzel dinners & I really enjoyed it.

You got a lot of food & it was very tasty And the price was only $10.00 each, which included salad or soup.

Its a casual place off 210, with plenty of parking & seating.  The service could have been better, but I will look forward to going back for this dinner again!

This is one of the better Italian restaurants we have found in the area. I hear their pizza is great but that is a long was to drive to have pizza.  Every time we go there we are swayed away from their pie buy the rest of their great menu.  The ravioli was excellent. Tortelloni was also very good.  The chicken Alla Rosa was great.   Prices are reasonable and service is excellent.  One of these days we will get around to trying their pizza but for now the rest of the menu is just too inviting.

Entrées average... $8.95 through $10.95    (16.95 - 18.95 As of January 2010)

Steaks and surf and turf can get up around $24.00

We have been there many times and have not been disappointed yet.

Hurricane Grill and Wings on CR210     Alyssa     11/26/2007

Great prices, great island atmosphere, great wings and wow those garlic parm fries. I cannot say enough good things about this place. There are many wing places in St Aug and Jax that have just OK wings so I was thrilled to find this little gem.

They have five categories of wing flavors for any temperature you like. The flavors in each category are outside the norm which is a nice change from the usual teriyaki or bbq.

They have ample outside seating but seating inside is limited so try to avoid rush times. Check them out www.hurricanewings.com

I agree, this is a charming place.  A nice place to have lunch and sit outside.  Help was very friendly and eager to help you with your selection.   Prices were good and the wings were very good but...they could have been larger.  I hate small wings. These were not the largest wings I have had.

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse  1201 Riverplace Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207     Charles Stamm  11/2007

This has to be one of the best steak houses in the country.  A bit on the pricey side but what isn't these days.  They tell us your steak is broiled at 1,800(degrees) oven and served on a plate heated to 500 degrees.

This is not a place you would go to every day but for that special occasion, and you like steak, this is the place to go. You can not find a better steak.  The petite Fillet and Shrimp was excellent.  The other shrimp dishes were also excellent. The side dishes of potatoes and vegetables were great. In our party of 6 this night, everyone raved about their meals. Additionally, the menu includes select fresh seafood & other meat entrees. They offer a variety of fresh-cooked vegetables, including seven kinds of potatoes, salads, homemade desserts. Order the cheesecake and they bring not a slice but a small cheesecake pie that will feed four.

The service was excellent.  The food is outstanding.  And...the view...well the restaurant is situated right on the river looking at the Jacksonville skyline.  We often frequented the Ruth's Chris Steakhouse back in Jersey, thinking that they had the best steaks I have ever eaten.  This Jacksonville location is equally as good. If you have high standards in steak, you have to try this place.

We went to the Jacksonville location for the view.  There is another location in Ponte Vedra Beach which is a little closer to WGV.

This is "Local Flavor" at it's best.  Voted "Best Neighborhood Tavern in St. Augustine.  This is a theme restaurant based on the movie Gone with The Wind. If you have some friends coming to visit, as you are showing them the St George Street area, this is a fun spot to take them.  Great sandwiches, appetizers, salads, fried chicken and burgers.

Parking is a problem all over the downtown areas but when  you do find a parking spot, this would be a great place to go for lunch or dinner.  The place is decorated with posters and photos from the movie and has a nice neighborhood feel to it.  Theme nights on different days of the week feature home style cooking one night, then Mexican the next, Italian, wing, shrimp and Oysters, and then seafood.

We went on a Saturday evening so naturally it was crowded but we did find a table right away and the service was surprisingly prompt and friendly. The grilled cheese deluxe was the best grilled cheese sandwich my husband ever had.  Piled high with bacon and tomatoes.  The grouper sandwich was also excellent.

Atmosphere, good food, reasonable prices and fast courteous service.  What more can you ask for.  Give them a try.  We will be back.

Good place.  Very good food. Service was also very good.  This restaurant has a Spanish or Cuban cuisine that has a lot of interesting dishes on the menu.  My wife, Doris had the Cannelloni de Langosta.   Cannelloni pasta filled with Maine lobster meat, shrimp, scallops and shallots blended with a lobster cream sherry mornay cheese sauce.  That was great.  $19.95.

I took the Tenderloin Salteado which featured tenderloin tips onions, green peppers, garlic, mushrooms, potatoes, chorizo with a heavy red wine sauce and yellow rice.  Again...Excellent!  18.95

Pricing is fair for an upscale eatery with a central location and wonderful ambiance.

Parking is always a pain in the butt in the old city but the Columbia has it's own parking lot which you get to from Spanish St.  Get your ticket stamped at the restaurant and the parking is free.

They have a great web site which gives you a look at their menu.  Check it out.

A good place to take your guests for an evening of fine dining.  After dinner you walk around St George Street and do some people watching.

Collage (www.collagestaug.com) is located in historic downtown and special occasion restaurant.  It is located near a parking lot. The restaurant is small and wonderfully decorated.

We had a wine steward present and serve the wine.  We had a Warmed Goat Cheese Salad ~ Macadamia Encrusted Goat Cheese, Artichokes, Croutons & Tomatoes in a Browned Butter Cider Vinaigrette. It was served with sour dough bread and a butter pesto.   Yum! The bread was slightly burnt on the bottom. My husband had the clam chowder.   Between courses they served brandy apricot sorbet.  Very French.  For entrees my husband had a Hand Cut USDA Choice N.Y. Strip Steak with Béarnaise Butter~ With A Tarragon Compound Butter.  I had Veal Orleans ~ Scaloppini of Veal Tenderloin Dipped in Egg and Sautéed with Sherry and Demi-Glaze; Finished in a Buerre Blanc with Two Shrimp and an Artichoke.  I had it without the shrimp because I am allergic.  I requested an order of sautéed vegetables because my husband's side was delicious.

The server quickly offered to bag our wine to go since we did not finish our bottle.   This is a new Florida law.  This restaurant has been a favorite of ours and the food was very good.  But it is very pricey.

January 2009 Update      Charles Stamm

Went back again to this hidden jewel of St Augustine for my wife's birthday With Bob and Diane Thornton of Bearsford.  All loved it. I had the Fillet with was every bit as good and tender as at Ruth's Chris or Morton's Steak House.  Diane had the Pork Osso Bucco for $26 which was outstanding.  My wife Doris had the Chilean Sea Bass for $25...again...outstanding. Bob got the Paella Valenciana for $25 that he absolutely loved. ( Gilled chicken, pork shrimp and chorizo with calamari scallops, clams, and new Zealand mussels on saffron rice)  The service was outstanding. In fact, the waiter over heard us talking and brought my wife over a nice slice of cheesecake that he had dribbled "Happy Birthday" in a strawberry sauce for her special occasion. The presentation of all dishes is outstanding.

For a special occasion...This is our one of our favorites in St. Augustine.  Well hidden inside the Castillo Real hotel but well worth it. This place reminds me of some of the great restaurants in the NY/NJ area.  Well Done!

This is a higher class restaurant with everything you need to have a good time.   Great food. Wonderful ambiance. Excellent service. Moderate prices.  The meals come out as a work of art. They have a wonderful Poached Pear Salad that will start you off on a high note.  And...it gets better. The crab bisque with petite crab cake was one of the best any of us had ever had.  I had the Roasted Fillet Mignon with wild mushroom and cream sauce.  Our friends had the Petite Rack of Lamb with Rosemary Mint Demi-Glaze, Vegetables and Garlic Mashed Potatoes "Out of this World" I think was the term used to describe this one...Chilean Sea Bass with crispy light potato crisps, with a Cilantro Cream Sauce and Lump Crab Meat stuffed mushrooms.  "WOW!"   Was the expression for this one.   Prices were reasonable for the quality of food you got.  $25 for the Fillet Mignon. $5 for the bowl of soup.  $24 for the Chilean Sea Bass.  This is a well hid secret restaurant.

The presentation of all the food and polite staff made this place one of the best we've been to in St. Augustine.  This is a fine dining experience.

It is a little hard to find the first time. It is located inside the Castillo Real Hotel.  As you head south on A1A from the 312 bridge look for the hotel on the beach side ( Left side )

We have eaten at this restaurant three times, one of which was a super wine dinner that was by reservation only. Normally, the restaurant does not take reservations. The food is great. The menu consists of appetizers, pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. They also have daily dinner specials. The last time we dined there, we started with the mozzarella bruschetta, which was wonderful. Then we chose from the dinner specials, such as pesto grilled swordfish over toasted coconut basmati, asparagus and pineapple salsa. Also, they have a nice wine list. The service is excellent and enthusiastic. I'd say it was moderately expensive for the dinner specials and reasonable for the standard menu items. Web site is www.biscottis.net. Enjoy.

La Cocina Mexican Restaurant

This has to be the best Mexican restaurant in St Augustine.  The best I've been to anyway.  I like Mexican food.   This place is a step above the rest.

La Cocina is in a different ballgame from El Pottro and Acapulco. ( Both of whom I like )

This place has great quality, great taste and an excellent staff.  We had a party of 6 and the waitress didn't write anything down... and didn't get anything wrong. We had a lot of questions about the menu and we split the check three ways!  She knew the menu well and all the ingredients of all the dishes and made some great recommendations.

We had some interesting meals from the menu.

The Jose Cuervo Flaming Shrimp Fajitas not only tasted great but they put on quite a show at the table presenting it.

The Vera Cruz-Style Red Snapper was "Excellent."

Same with the Shrimp and Peppers.

Bob Thornton recommends the Fish Millanaise.

Don't forget to try some of their very good appetizers.  The Queso Fundido was a nice surprise.  I hear the Shrimp and Cactus Salad is outrageous.

All great food.  The service could have been a little faster but tolerable.   Just be patient.  It is worth it. Everyone in our party had a great meal.  If you like Mexican food...this is the best in town.

We went back on a Tuesday night...6:30pm and the place was packed.  Had to wait about 20 minutes for a table for 2.  They were understaffed and the wait really dampened the experience.  Don't know why they were so busy on a Tuesday but the staff did not understand it as well. Maybe Spring Break.  Perhaps the secret is out on this place but they are going to need more tables and some more help.  Food was good but not the same experience as my first time there.  Parking is on the side street.  Chas  <'////><

There are a couple of things that will get all of us worked up.  One of them is Pizza.  If you are going to give us a review of pizza places in and around WGV, we have to understand where you are coming from.  East Coast, Midwest, West Coast, South, etc.  Once we know where you are from, we can evaluate whether we might agree with you or not.

OK, so when you submit a review, give us some info as to what part of the country or world you are coming from.  That will give us an idea if we might be able to agree with you or disregard your opinion all together because you haven't a clue what good pizza is anyway!

Remember, just because you may disagree with anyone on your pie, it is never "Right or wrong."  With Pizza, it is just "Different."  It is all too personal.  It is what you like.  Lets here from you!

This place used to be the old Benito's of Vilano Beach. They have some of the best Pizza in town if you like thin crust pizza.
We had a half plain and half pepperoni.
It was excellent.
The problem with this place is it's appearance. The windows, just like the old Benito's look like they have not been cleaned in years.
From the outside, a first time customer would have to think twice about coming into this restaurant.

The food is good. you need to get past the filthy windows. The waitress told us it was too hard to clean the windows and too expensive to replace them.

I don't know...I'd replace these old filthy windows. It makes the place look trashy.
The food is good. The Pizza is Excellent.

Located next to the Shell gas station on King street in St Augustine.  Across from the Winery.
The pizza is one of the best we've found in and around saint Augustine.  Order it by the slice. Thin crust is excellent. friendly service.  Parking can be an issue at busy times as the gas station takes up much of the parking area but the place is worth it.

I don't know about the wine list or the bread or the dessert menu as all we had was Pizza.

NY Style Pizza.  The thin crust is the best!
Great PIZZA.

Great New York Style Pizza.  If you like a thin crust pie where the sauce goes all the way to the edge, this place is for you.

You can’t get the Pizza in the restaurant though.  You have to get it in the bar area.  That’s just fine because they have 5 large screen TVs sets all with sports on them.

The atmosphere here is great.  Ice cold beer and thin crust pizza.  It doesn’t get much better than this.

Give Giovanni’s a try.  One of the best!

I loved the pizza at New York Pizza Company.  It was the best I have had in a long time.  Also, their wings were amazing.  MY girlfriend had a salad, and she said it was great.  I really liked the food here, and I'll be back soon.

Looking for good NY style pizza, then look no further than Jenk's.  We've been getting takeout from Jenk's for several years now and they have been very consistent with their pizza.  They have all of the standards.  We've also had many different dishes, but I still think that their pizza is what puts them ahead of everyone else.  If you're looking for NY pizza in NE Florida, then give Jenk's a try.

I agree with Brian.  This place has some great NY Pizza. I ask for the "Extra Thin and well done" pie. You have to sort of insist and they will make it that way.  Excellent. Some of the best around.

Great Pizza! Just he way we like it.  Thin crust, well done and not too much tomato sauce.  Some places just put too much sauce on their pizza.  This was great! We will definitely be back!

The pizza was so good here I had to come back for a second time before writing this review.  For a lover of the "Thin Crust, NY style of Pizza", this is the place to go in the St Augustine area.  This is the best.  Ask for a thin crust and "well done" and it's like you are back in Brooklyn, NY.  The place is not much to look at. Inside the windows and walls look like they have not been cleaned in years but do not let that stop you.  The pizza is great. I had to come back to this place to see if it was a fluke.  It was not.  The pizza was great both times.  Thin crust. Crispy. Cooked to perfection. They have a full bar and do serve other Italian food which I will have to try but for now, I just can't get past the Pizza.

If you like thin crust, NY style pizza, you have to try this place. The atmosphere is relaxed and seems more like a beachcomber style of restaurant than a pizzeria.  Friendly service and cold beer. Their sauce is made fresh everyday.

Go across the Vilano Bridge and make a right at the light.  Then make a right at Vilano Rd.  the place is near the end on the right.

This place is not related to the two other Benito's restaurants up on CR210 and the one up by the Avenue's mall on US rt 1.

Rest Reveiw stars:            *

Fairly new place that opened up next to the gas stations at I95 in the old Sbarro location. I was hoping for good pizza since it is so close to the WGV and they deliver but the pizza was the equivalent of a half cooked frozen pizza. It's bad...really bad. Sauce had no flavor and cheese was not even melted. Do not waste your time or money on this one. I really hope they can turn it around otherwise they will never make it

Originally from Columbus, Ohio.  The Pizza Garden has excellent pizza and Italian entrees.  Very tasty.  They have both thick (Sicilian) and thin pizza.  My wife and I like the thin crust, my son likes the thick crust.  I would highly recommend it.  Easy to find on A1A, just north of Rt.312.

Al's Pizza  Jacksonville         Alyssa  5/19/2008

Fabulous! They have several locations but we always go to the one on Phillips Hwy. They can get very busy at peak times but so worth the wait. Kid friendly with several items on the menu just for little ones. The service is always fantastic!

On a typical night we get a calamari appetizer ($6.99)and half cheese / half sausage, pepperoni, onion ($11.99+). Calamari is so fresh and never soft or chewy. Pizza is thin and quite delicious. The sauce is what makes it unique...somewhat of a sweeter sauce.

They have everything from salads to wraps to calzones to pizza of course. Menu and locations available on line www.alspizza.com. Highly recommended.

CiCi's Pizza

CiCi's Pizza  Publix Shopping Center CR312 St Augustine            Charles Stamm   11/2007

This place is unique in that for $5.99 you get a salad and all the pizza you can eat.  All by individual slices.  It is served cafeteria style.  The kids like this as you get to try all different styles of pizza one slice at a time.   Chicken, pineapple, steak, Hawaiian, pepperoni, etc.

Good value for the price but the pizza sucks and the last two times we were there the place was filthy.  No offence but this is "assembly line pizza."  Even worse than Domino's if that is possible.

This place is good.  I like it.  You have to tell them specifically..."Extra Thin Crust and Crispy!"  They will make it that way and it is not bad.  I like a thin crust pie.  If you do also, try it.  It is one of the best I've had down here.   Would be nice if they delivered.

The weird thing about this place is that they are CLOSED ON SUNDAY!  What's with that?!  Back in Jersey, that was the biggest marketing day for Pizza sales.   Football and Pizza!  Hello!

They tell me everyone down here goes to the beach on Sunday and they do not order pizza.  So they stay closed.

Oy!

They have a web site that you can get a coupon or two and save a couple of bucks  www.cinospizza.com

This is the Pizza Hut on 312 and RT1.

The place was dark & filthy.  Parking lot is really weird.

Sunday evening...7:30 pm...the place was empty...only three tables with customers...after being ignored for a really long time we left.

BAD service.  Never did get to try the food.

I'll have to give them a second try...NOT!

Borrillo's Pizza

Borrillo's Pizza & Subs  88 San Marco Ave.   St. Augustine  829-1133       Charles Stamm  10/2007

This place was recommended to us by a local resident as being "Good New York Pizza." They advertise that on their signage out front.  It is OK.  A bit too "cheesy" for me.  The cheese was laid on too thick for me.  Some, in fact many may like that.

It was good and very filling.  We had to take most of it home.  This place is worthy of your opinions.

This place also advertises " Voted Best Pizza in St Augustine" by folio magazine 6 year in a row.

I don't know about that but...it's worth a try.

This place also advertises "New York Style Pizza."  I doubt if anyone in this place has ever been to New York.  It appeared to me that they believe the difference in a New York style of pizza is in the size of the pie.  Nothing about the type of cheese, amount of cheese, and what goes into making of the dough and sauces.  We asked for a "Thin Crust" but got anything but.  It was as thick and mushy as "Dominos."  Ah!

I think they thought that if you make a 16 inch pizza, that qualifies as "New York Style Pizza.  NOT!

Chicago Pizza

Chicago Pizza, Bakery and Pub on CR210   St Augustine         Alyssa      11/26/2007

My husband, being from Chicago, said we had to try this place since getting "great pizza" in Florida is next to impossible. The pizza is deep dish with a yummy buttery crust and any topping you like. It's a neat place with tables, a bar, and a lounge area. According to my husband the atmosphere is straight from Chicago. They have live entertainment and the bands we have seen were surprisingly good! The service is good but the pizza's take a while so order an appetizer (hence only four stars). Check them out www.chicagopizzabakery.com

Pizzalley's

Pizzalley's  on St George   St Augustine       Charles Stamm  10/2007

This place is right in the middle of St George Street in downtown St Augustine.  In the Old City.  Very good pizza.  They are the ones handing out samples in the street as you walk by. They have a nice area to sit in the rear of the restaurant as well serving a host of Italian specialty dishes.  Their dough is made fresh on the premises.

It can get a bit hectic during peak dinner times but the food is good.  The front section of the restaurant seems squished into an ally but after you've been there a couple of times you get used to it.  It works.  Pizza is personal so...you have to give it a try.
