This summer when I serviced my AC unit, I noticed refrigerant escaping when I removed the high side service port cap. With the extremely high pressures of today's AC units, leaks are common so you need quality service port caps to prevent refrigerant from escaping the shrader valve service ports. At over fifty bucks a pound, you need to do everything you can to prevent refrigerant loss. If you are not a service technician, then have these on hand for your service technician when repairs are needed. The most often needed repair is adding refrigerant so the AC unit will cool properly. These caps will help reduce that loss. A word of advice- do not wait until the hottest day of summer when all the low refrigerant AC units need charging because they will not cool. If you notice your AC is not cooling quite as efficiently as before and you change the filter hoping this will help, but the unit still runs more than usual and just will not cool properly, call and have your unit serviced. Most likely two or three pounds of refrigerant will solve the problem and save you money on your electric bill. More than likely you can get a technician out the same day if you do not wait. NOTE: if you are not certified for refrigerant use, I do not recommend that you service your AC unit.

I got these because I am accumulating a lot of things that have 1/4 inch male flare fittings, like heat pump access ports, HVAC hoses and miscellaneous fittings. Putting caps on male threads protects them and the o ring in the cap will prevent gas from escaping if the schrader valve is leaking. The quality of these caps is pretty good but it does vary somewhat. For example, most of the caps thread on smoothly, but some of them get stuck. This is because there are some bits of brass in the threads. I was able to get even the stuck threads working by blowing compressed air into them, but it may not be worth your time since they are so inexpensive you can just try another one. I leak tested a number of these using compressed air at 150 psi and they did not leak.Another thing I used these for is to make a schrader valve leak tester. Drilling a small hole in the cap you can screw the cap onto a fitting with a schrader valve and apply leak detector solution to the cap without getting the valve covered in leak solution. If bubbles appear from the hole in the cap you know the schrader valve is leaking.
