As usual, all Starrett products are first rate

Starrett have a good name for tools. My experience with them has been a bit hit-and-miss to date, unfortunately. They're expensive, so you’re expecting top quality, but you're likely in for a disappointment, unfortunately. The last set of Starrett pin vices I bought were, to put not too fine a point on it, simply not fit for purpose. They've been returned. This Starrett S240Z example is significantly better, but given the cost I’m still not that impressed. The Pro’s:The pin vices have a good heft; they feel good in the hand. The knurling on the tools is sharp and well defined, offering an excellent interface between the user and the tools. They look good and I like the hollow design, allowing the vice to grip tools that are ostensibly too long.Unlike the previous Starrett examples, where the collets are fixed in handle and have a polished finish, the S240Z collets are removable and have been given a black oxide finish, which looks very smart. The collet jaws look to have been manufactured with some care and the jaws are made well enough that I’m confident that the drill bits I’ll be using will be well centred in the vice, certainly well enough for my purposes. In use, the collet offers a reasonable grip to the bits being worked with. Using the B collet, drilling a 1.5mm hole in soft wood was possible, though I needed to be very careful about the amount of pressure I was applying, or the drill bit would slip in the vice. With a little perseverance, it worked however. That’s a big improvement over the previous example. The Con’s:The screw threads for each of the collet heads, as with the last set, is of very poor quality. A little cleaning and lubrication made them feel much better, but as you can see from the photographs the threads themselves are pretty chewy. In Summary:Given the cost of these simple tools I would expect that the fit & finish would be much better, with a cleaner, more refined collet retaining thread and a collet jaw design that offered significantly better grip. They do what I need them to, in this instance, and I’ll be hanging on to them. Given the cost, however, I can’t offer any more that a 3-star rating. They’re better than the junk I’ve had before, but if I’d have looked at these in a shop, having seen how poorly they had been finished, I certainly wouldn’t have bought them given the price.Pretty on the outside, with lots of potential, but poorly crafted on the inside where it matters I'm afraid.

As usual, great Professional product from L.S Starrett! More expensive than others but worth it, if you need precision tools.

Thought the quality would be better being that it was Starrett. I am a Tool and Die maker by trade, and just not up to my standards.

The pin vises were as expected...top quality, items that will last. and something fun to own. Starrett productsprovide a telling background against which to evaluate other tools and devices. In so doing, the mediocrity of the other products (mostly foreign) is unveiled. I f you're thinking cheap and searching for great deals (junk, i.e.), don't waste your time thinking of Starrett!
