This 240A Starrett pin vice was purchased to hold a .032" drill to make precision orifices. The body of the pin vise is of Starrett quality. However, the actual collet/vise jaws are poorly made. One of the four jaws is noticeably smaller than the other three, causing the drill bit to clamp off center, rotate "off axis" and wobble while spinning. The 240A was purchased specifically for the smooth surface on the body that can be held in a collet, so the body spins true, but because of the vice jaws, the drill doesn't. I'll have to replace the jaws with one of better quality. It's disappointing to see one of Starrett's name branded tools perform in this manner. In the opinion of most, they are held as the "cream of the crop" in machinist tools. For the price, I'm keeping the vice body, but will have to replace the jaws.

Knurling and quality of handle and collet holder are great. Collet is not up to my expectations for Starrett (and the premium for their tools). Slotted slightly off center, and one tine is misaligned and smaller than the others. This creates a gap even when tightened that causes parts to slip.

I'm just about to call it quits on Starrett as much as I have loved their tools over the years. Last pin vise I'll buy of theirs anyway. The quality is no longer there and it's quite inconsistent. What killed it for me was my recent customer service experience with them (more on that at the end) - it was shocking, based on past experiences with them. This pin vise is a nice model, covering a bit wider range than the usual "A" model, while still being small to fit near edges and corners, and easy to twirl. I bought one on ebay a couple weeks prior to buying this on on amazon. That one arrived with defective knurling (pretty bad), a dented tube near the top, but the killer was the gritty threads and heavily burred collet which made it a royal pain to try and work with. I couldn't return it so I contacted Starrett. This one from amazon is better other than the collet itself needing a lot of finish work - about a half hour with a #2 swiss file and a stone followed by manually working it for awhile with some oil got it working fairly smoothly and it still grips a #80 bit tightly. If I didn't need it I'd return this one.If you don't need this skinny capless style of pin vise, I would highly recommend Japanese models from Tamiya instead. They're a bit bulkier and use a double-ended double collet design, but they are smooth as butter, grip tightly in all ranges, and are impeccably finished (like Starrett used to be). The cost is about the same. The cap on those models is very nice to have most of the time, too...the tool itself is much heavier, however, so with the finest bits care must be taken. Failing there, I would seriously consider taking your chances with the cheapie models from China like the SE brand or Fowler. The set from Moody is quite nice as well, doesn't seem to be available individually on amazon. The old 240A I had from Starrett sadly went missing and it was SO much nicer than the two recent versions I received in 2020.The kicker for me was contacting Starrett. They have always been wonderful. Short story is that I feel robbed now and have basically spent over $50 for one lackluster pin vise. I was suspicious that maybe the (new) one I received from ebay might not be legit as it came in a plastic bag rather than the envelope or retail card, and the quality was so far off the mark for Starrett that I couldn't help but wonder. So I asked via email and rather than answer a single one of the questions or offer to let me share photos, they told me to mail it back to them. So I mailed it at my expense. Later, I received an invoice via email that was to charge me $25 for the pin vise and also another $10 for shipping it back to me (it cost me $4.10 to send it to them). I told them to keep it for trash, recycling, or donation...didn't get a reply back. This is not the Starrett I remember, either in quality or in service. A couple other items I've gotten from them recently were also not up to their usual snuff, but others were fine. There's enough competition that although I really want to support them, I don't think I'll maintain loyalty to them even if it means settling for more overseas items if they're adequate. I basically said the opposite in some recent reviews for other Starrett items...kinda rubbed me the wrong way now. I don't mind cleaning up a little rough but being treated poorly is another story.

I bought this to fill a need and based on the manufacturer's reputation over decades of fabrication, repair, and maintenance work. I was not disappointed. This not something we should have to buy again but I would recommend it to friends and family.Bill
