While I know not everyone will be in my particular use case of wanting an easily accessible hard drive bay to run TrueNAS on a mini PC and can't fault UGREEN or Amazon for the fact that this technically unsupported use case doesn't work, it still makes this otherwise really nice enclosure useless to me.The problem is that TrueNAS requires at least 2 drives to make a ZFS pool, with all the RAID modes of this enclosure, it presents itself as a single drive. The JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Drives) mode is fuctionally identical to the RAID 0 mode, which makes no sense and the PM (Port Multiplier) mode shows as 5 USB drives, hurray it'll work. NOPE, they all report as the same serial number and most Linux distro will recognize only one. TrueNAS gives a warning and then even refuses to create a storage pool.

Works great but when I first received it, I couldn't get it to power on, I was convinced it was dead on arrival. My instructions did not mention you have to press and hold the power button down if you change the raid config. You have to keep holding it until it powers up. After the first powerup, you have to shutdown and restart and then it works. One other thing to watch out for is the DIP switches, they stick out beyond the case a tiny bit. While I was handling the case during the setup, I kept inadvertently and unknowingly, moving the switches to a new position. Until I figured this out, it only lead to more confusion surrounding why the the selected RAID function wasn't working and I would encounter the powerup problem again as the RAID config changed, adding to my confusion and frustration. Once I had figured those two issues out I was able to complete the config and the unit was been working perfectly for two months now.

The design is good, the idea is good, and it is not too noisy, but it's flaky. Sometimes It does not recognize drives, and it is painfully slow compared to what USB C can be.

This is my first RAID, I have not had it long but I had the same problem as another reviewer where it would not enter raid but showed up as 5 disks. I had to turn it off, hold the re set as I powered it on and hold for 15-20sec, then it entered raid mode and was easy to set up. Hope this helps someone else having the same problem. Other than that quark, it has all been easy going!

So first I was previously using a Terramaster D5-300 with five Iron Wolf 8T disks. With ambient temperature at 22 Celsius my disk temperature was 49~50 when idle! While it's not that hot but it concerns me. Finally switched to this ugreen one, and the build quality is just so much better (surprise me) and with the same five Iron Wolf 8T disks, I get ~43 Celsius when it's under full load! What a difference! And the speed is faster than D5, very happy! And I recommend it to all that looking for a 5 bay disk enclosure.
