I'll be honest, I've never used the lanyard on my boat. I know that I probably should but never had reason to until recently when I let my son drive the boat. Rather than sitting, he was standing trying to reach something on the other side of the boat when we go hit by a farily large wave broad side. I was at the bow so I couldn't do anything and the wave sent him crashing to the floor and the boat making a sharp right turn to the starboard side still under power. I was able to get to the helm pretty quickly and right ourselves but had I not been able to there is a good chance we could have hit some pilings. It was then that I thought about the lanyard and why it's a good idea to have one attached to you when underway. I told him to attach it to his belt loop but it was so weathered that rather than stretching it broke. I decided that it would be best to teach my son (and me) proper boating skills and orderd this replacment. It clipped right on and from now on anyone operating the boat will have to wear it.

The clip falls off because it is not designed as a safety device and renders it inoperable, so if you fall out of your boat it will not stop the engine.
