The main challenge I have with water shoes around here (Southern Maryland) is the intrusion of the beach into the shoes. I have tried a variety of water safe shoes before like the rubber ones with the holes (brand name based on the animal that will see you "in a while" ;-). Those allow the coarse sand and shells in through the back or the holes so I end up walking on sand and shells anyway. Same with the kind that have laces or Velcro and soles with "drain holes" in the bottom. Basically. most water shoes seem to allow coarse sand and tiny shells that our local beaches are made of into them almost instantly. These are by far the most resistant to beach intrusion that I have found to date! They have a very simple stretch fabric design, and a sort of cuff that lays tight against the foot or ankle skin so as to not let sand and shells easily into the top of the shoe. The soles are solid so not much tries get in that way either. I find myself rinsing them out a couple times a day rather than a couple times an hour like I do with the other types I've used. The sole is thick enough for the purpose. I wouldn't like to go on a technical hike with them but they are great for beach, boat, kayak, paddleboard kind of stuff. Most of our local beaches have a little walk from the parking lot down to the river and these water shoes are good enough for that kind of little trail if your feet aren't too tender and the gravel isn't too coarse, though I still tend to change shoes down on the beach when I arrive and before going back up mostly because I don't care for the feel of walking in wet footwear. The only odd quirk on mine is that on the left shoe the fabric pattern is backwards! The words on the print are backwards on the left side, and normal on the right shoe. The fabric is not inside out, it looks like it just got printed backwards somehow. Really odd! For the purpose, I don't really care but if you're sensitive to that kind of thing it could give you fits. If it were not for this odd issue I'd give them 5 stars. At the time I requested these the only pattern they had in my size (men's 13!) was the cartoonish sharks that have words. If you choose a more adult styling without the words this would not be an issue either. This is the only type or style of water shoe I'll be buying going forward. I got a similar pair for my daughter (11) and she loves them too for all the same reasons!
