It's rough. VERY rough. It arrives dirty. VERY dirty. It's finicky. VERY finicky.BUT BUT BUT... with a little patience... it works.I will echo other reviewer's sentiments that, if you want a plug-and-play machine, this one is not for you.If however, you are mechanically inclined and don't mind the task of cleaning, filing and polishing it up, learning the ins and outs of how it works, and doing some regular tweaking, then I can confidently say it is worth the time and effort. In order to reach it's potential value to you, half your fun must be in the pursuit, and not the goal. I personally enjoyed the shining up process, learning how it works, and learning how to make it work properly. I watched at least a dozen youtube videos (highly recommend Harrison Hightower's Manly Acres youtube series before purchasing). There is a Facebook page dedicated to this machine, also recommended. This machine has forced me to learn a lot about how a sewing machine works, basics of thread sizes and tensioning, and trouble shooting, kind of like boot camp for sewing machine operators. Having passed this test I fear no machine should I ever decide to upgrade.Through the process I have bonded with this little hunk of junk, that has been part of the joy of the experience, and for the moment it is running smoothly and reliably. So what do you have to lose? Well, besides $120, there's several hours of your time, frustration, part of your sanity, and deep seated feelings of failure and shame if you give up and toss it in the trash. Why are you still here? Stop reading and go get one already. Don't say you weren't told.

I ordered the 10 bearing machine. I believe the extra 2 bearings are added to ride in the cam wheel handle and widen the bearing contact surface. That would really make a difference if you intend to add an electric motor. The flywheel is grooved for a v-belt. That groove makes the bobbin winder pretty useless as the rubber wheel can't decide if it rides in the groove or on the outside rim.The package arrived intact, but a few pieces were loose inside the packing. The machine was covered in rust preventative and Styrofoam pieces just like everyone else stated. The machine had no rust on it. The included stand is not usable, so plan on mounting it to a base. You can see lots of ideas on YouTube. I mounted it to a base, oiled it, and turned the crank to use up some of the sample thread left over on the test piece supplied. It sewed. After cleaning it all up, I wound a bobbin by hand and set the machine up with the included nylon line. The machine sewed with no issues. Yes, the thread broke a couple times until the tension was right and there was a learning curve. There are lots of good videos to show how to get it working well.I'm not sure if the 10 bearing is worth the cost over the 8 bearing, but it does work. I would definitely buy the 8 bearing as a minimum. The standard machine is only 4 bearing and there is metal to metal contact that has to be lubricated often. So far, I really am happy with my purchase. I dropped it by one star for 2 reasons. 1) The poor bobbin winder function. 2) The second bobbin carrier supplied does not have a tension spring and is not useable.Other than that, it is a good value on a machine that works and will likely last a very long time.

I got my machine this week and waited until today (Saturday) to unbox it. Inside the box the machine was wrapped in plastic and coated in a light, though dark, oil which is what I expected, and everything that should have been in the box was there. So far so good.I've watched hours of YouTube videos, read dozens of posts in the Facebook group for these machines, I'm a blacksmith, shade-tree auto mechanic AND I have refurbished a couple sewing machines ... so I thought I was ready to set it up. The short version of my problems:- The pitman arm (which drives the bobbin housing) was practically seized in the raceway. It was bent AND had a bulge in it from where it was hit while it was hot. I had to grind out the bulge and all of the burrs along the gear teeth.- The shuttle bearer (hold the bobbin and the shuttle hook) was not square. That is, the side was not 90 degrees to the surface that the gear was welded to. When I moved the pitman arm the bearer would bind against the inside of the bobbin casement. Fortunately a little sanding was all that was needed.- The needle control arm was 5mm too long and it could not move past the bearing housing at the crank. I had to grind off the material to get clearance. FIVE millimeters!!- The needle control arm was twisted. When I finally got the crank to turn but the needle arm also scraped against the main body. I was able to fix that with a little filing along the area where it was rubbing. So why 1 star for a machine that I knew was going to need assembly/setup? This amount of setup and adjustment is beyond anything I've heard anyone else report (most folks would have stopped at the stuck pitman arm and sent it back). I shouldn't have to spend 4 hours fixing errors that should have been obvious of anyone had tried the machine at the factory - even giving the crank a single turn before removing the crank wheel for packing would have told them this machine was bad.I still don't have it sewing. I'm onto the usual adjustments and settings for thread tension and timing that most people have to do, but I ran out time for now. I'm really hoping I don't find any other problems.

Ok, here are the simple facts about this machine. They are bullet proof. They sew very well. They are worth the money. They are a pain in the neck to get going.Like you I read many reviews about this unit trying to decide if it was right for me, some good and some not so good and some down right terrible.I am pretty mechanically inclined, so i thought I'd take a chance and get one.It came wrapped in plastic and covered in oil "as expected. After some cleaning and set up, I had all the problems I had read about:Wouldn't pick up the bobbin threadThread kept breakingWouldn't sewSo like many others before me I turned to YouTube for answers. Some good, some not so good, I tried them all, without luck. It's like a combination lock everything needs to align for it to work, get them all right be one wont work, fix one change another, wont work. These are non precession machines, " what do you expect for 150They are unrefined and will need refinement. These are the four things you will need to do to get it working.Clean and polish the bobbin shuttle to a shine with 800 wet and dry paper, The thread will be less likely to catch and break, it will unspool smooth. The needle depth is paramount, too deep, the thread will break, too shallow, the thread will break. The proper location of the bobbin shuttle. there are two ways to adjust and get this right. One is to have the handle at the 12:00 position and the shuttle at 3:00 the second is to adjust to hook on the shuttle hook to be just behind the needle before it retracts, you can at that time visually see the needle and the depth it needs to be. Some on YouTube say 1/4" bla bla bla, your machine may be 1/4" or an 1/8"And lastly the tension, too loose knots up, too tight it breaks.Like I said I watched YouTube and just about gave up, but as I had mentioned, I am pretty mechanically inclined. So I started anew and spent some time studding every part and how it worked and the sequence it needed to be in to work and it began to all make sense. They are actually quite simple and work very well.So what I would say to you is:If you are mechanically inclined and are willing to spend a little time with it to get it running "It will sew"Buy it and enjoy the challengeIf you are not mechanically inclined and don't want to be bothered trying to figure it out, don't buy it and spend more money and get something that all the bugs are al ready worked out for you.In short, when I started, I was almost sorry I bought it,now I couldn't be happier with it.Hope some of this helps you!!
