An attractive brass bell, shaken vigorously, it's quite loud and a metal whistle, also quite loud. These are not only for shooing a bear away, they can be used by a group member or child who wanders off to help locate them. Thank you

I'll start with the confusing part, the bell. Yes, it rings, I guess it's a little loud, so it must just be to let the bears know that something is coming, could be a biped, could be a goat... either way, quite possibly a meal. Make sure that you put some thread-locker on the bell gong. That should keep it in place and is a much better idea than removing it so it doesn't get lost. This is something that should have been done by the manufacturer if they were worried enough about it coming off to warn people. This is a similar set up to the same type of item from PILHCY which I reviewed already but this one has a different carabiner. The bell and whistle are the same. So much so that the bell comes in the exact same fabric pouch. The carabiner with this set up does not have a retractable lanyard which makes this a little more of a basic set up.The whistle is much louder than the bell is, but it would get really annoying to be blowing the whistle while you're out for a hike to alert the bears. But, if you are seriously in distress, the whistle is what you want to have. For the price, I think it is worth it.
