The pilot unit is most often the problem with pilot light ignited gas appliances. Specifically, the thermocouple goes bad and will not send a small electrical charge to the control valve allowing the valve to open and light the flame. This is a safety feature to keep the control from releasing gas into the residence. Replacing the thermocouple can be problematic since not all thermocouples are alike so finding the correct thermocouple could be a problem. This unit is more compatable across the board for gas appliances and is easier to replace as a unit than just the thermocouple. As a matter of fact, you usually have to remove this unit to replace the thermocouple. Replace the entire unit: pilot, igniter, and thermocouple all at once. This will fix my gas water heater. This is the third thermocouple and that is the only problem I have had. The same problem occurs with blue flame heaters and other gas appliances. This unit could also be compatable those heaters. If performing this repair yourself, follow all codes and manufacturer's recommendations. Check for leaks using a leak detector available from Amazon. Before attempting this repair yourself, you should be familiar with gas appliances or become informed of the dangers and procedures for this type of repair. I recommend this replacement part highly.
