The number one thing on everyone’s mind when they see this camera accessory is how stratospheric the price is and for good reason, it’s almost hard to get around that, and for me the next thing is why do I need it. There seem to be some advantages but there also seem to be a few disadvantages and that’s what we will be covering here. For background, I am a career professional photographer who generally is more at home with high-end camera, and for those models a lot of the consumer based accessories seem trivial and often unnecessary. My X-T5 that I recently bought is for my own personal fun, family and travel picture taking and as such a different set of rules apply, and I do use certain accessories on it. One accessory that I have always used on similar cameras for my personal travel camera is a nice leather carrying half case to help absorb the normal day to day knocks and bumps a camera will take, with the theory that if I am halfway around the world I don’t want to lose the use of having my camera functional and operational. A half case also gives me a better grasp, especially on today’s cameras that tend to be more plasticky. When I’m actively using it I like to hold my camera by the handgrip, not with a tether but my wrapping the neck strap around my hand to discourage having it snatched out of my hand. To date I probably have never traveled with an unprotected camera and by buying this that means I am exchanging using a case for using this device.WHAT YOU GETFor almost a hundred and forty bucks including tax the only thing in there is a metal L-frame that attaches to the tripod mount screw to which is attached a vertical piece that makes the camera’s already excellent grip even thicker. No matter what is said that truly is all there is to it. The base makes the camera just very slightly taller and the handle part makes the existing one thicker. It does nothing to or for the rest of the camera, which means it leaves the rest of the camera completely exposed.QUALITY OF CONSTRUCTIONThe quality is impeccable, it matches the materials, design and function of the X-T5 perfectly, something no off brand can say. Once attached it becomes an integral part of the camera. It attaches by a robust metal screw that can be attached and detached using most common coins. There are no moving parts, it is machined to the bottom to form one piece and there is a material covering the handgrip that is identical in every way to what’s on the camera. Unlike the cheaper brands that push the idea of the product being made of soft silicone, this replicates not only the look but the feel of the camera’s body so there is no learning curve and when you hold it your grasp is 100% solid, no squishy surface to lose control over or become unglued at the wrong time, nor is there a chance that the edges will curl away from the camera over time as has been reported with the cheap knockoffs.BENEFITSThere are two practical benefits to this device. One is the obvious and most important, it thickens the existing body for people like me who like to carry the camera in my hand while in a picture taking session, it just makes it easier to hold. It actually does less when I actually have the camera to my eye than my right hand can be fully supporting the camera rather than depending on my left hand to cradle the lens, which is my normal shooting mode. That gives me a slight advantage for street photography that I can lift the camera up from my side to my eye and hold it steady while I take a photo. The second advantage is subtle and multi-part. There is the question of where do I put my pinky the way the camera is designed, problem solved here, there is just enough of a chamfered edge in from to finally give that pinky a home. Another subtle difference is by moving my index finger forward and up I no longer accidentally brush it against the front wheel or power switch (and sometimes even the still/movie switch) which is a design frustration I’ve run into with that camera. Then there is the built-in Arca Swiss mount that slides in seamlessly to tripods so equipped, saving a lot of time attaching and detaching a baseplate, which by the way can wiggle loose, and makes it impossible to set the camera down naturally on its base. This should rank as such an important feature as to put it at the top of the list of benefits. The final advantage is that the base part adds a substantial amount of protection to one of the vulnerable (and not very robust) existing camera baseplate. It does that so seamlessly after a few minutes you forget it’s there. The slight extra thickness adds very little weight and not enough extra height to make the camera seem bigger, but that slight amount in my opinion is how the camera should have been designed in the first place. That opinion is offset by keeping in mind that not everyone wants or like a large bulge of a handle, I had one camera that was too bulbous and I considered it a nuisance.DRAWBACKSI am not going to rate the price as a drawback. You get what you pay for and there are several non-Fuji branded alternatives for a fraction of the price. This one, being made by the camera’s maker is made of the same materials, the same finish and is an exact perfect fit. End of story. Virtually every review I read no matter where, praises the design as being perfect and I agree. There’s one more important point to remember. Many people choose the X-T5 camera because it is lighter and smaller than the DSLR they have been lugging around previously. Adding this gadget eats away slightly not only at the size advantage of a mirrorless, but the weight as well. I was surprised when I first touched this how heavy it really felt in my hand, that worried me. So when I removed my leather case I weighed it and it came in at very slightly under 50g, then I weighed it and it came in at just a tad over 50g, in other words a negligible difference. Worries over.COMPARISONSI wanted to save a hundred bucks or more by choosing one of the other variants from non-OEM brands and in the end none of them get it right or even close to getting it right as much as this one from the camera manufacturer. Their base is either too thick, or too angular at the edges or have an awkward cavity at the bottom that makes holding the camera feel weird and worst of all is that silicone design that they tout as being squishy but unfortunately that means it tends to peel away from the edge of camera, whereas the MHG XT5 almost literally becomes part of the camera in every possible way, including the choice of material and the way the bottom is totally smooth and the edges are chamfered to make a nice camera feel even nicer in my hand, it’s like they designed this thing to correct not making the camera that way in the first place.YES NO MAYBEWhen researching this product I found it almost impossible to find any place that had and truly descriptive photos of the actual product, surprising for something that is being sold to photographers. I felt it was my obligation to remedy that with as many close-up photos as I can, I hope they are useful and helpful to anyone shopping. There is a big “if” to making the decision to buy this thing, and that is lack of camera protection by not using a case. You have to make that choice and I thought about it for a long time. My conclusion was that every brand of half case has almost the identical design in which most of what it covers is the handle area, which is one of the least parts I need protecting. Other than that it protects mostly the bottom and a small area around the focus switch on the front, the rest of the entire camera is exposed. By using this instead the same grip area is protected as well as the vulnerable bottom of the camera. I really don’t think the area around the focus switch needs protecting and in practical fact, every case I’ve tried makes actually using that switch very difficult, so much so I have to turn the camera around facing me to rotate it to one of the three positions. With no case surrounding it the switch becomes much easier to use with my left hand by touch, and that is a huge improvement. So in my judgement, this bracket is as good or better than using a leather camera half case and the reality is I already have spent over a couple thousand bucks on the X-T5 and lens, my investment deserves the best handgrip on the market and this is it. I’m glad I didn’t succumb to the temptation to saving a few bucks, this accessory is one thing that brings so much improvement and usability to an already great camera, it’s worth every penny.

Ordered this to add some grip to my XT-5. The fit to the camera is perfect and makes hand holding for extended periods of time much more comfortable.

You can't go wrong with an OEM accessory. Sturdy and perfectly fits my Fujifilm X-T5 camera. The increased grip area makes a huge difference, especially for me who have been using a hand stripe instead of the neck one.

THIS GRIP is beautifully machined and finished. It is an exact fit and match with my X-T5. JUST Perfect Feel and Looks. The grip really makes my hold on the camera more secure. It will not be removed very often.
