Fit beautifully but would not lift. Instructions state to weight the hanger without unwinding - did that - would not work!

I had to use the spare tire on my 2000 F-150 the other day, so I lowered the wench and got the tire off. A few days later, when I tried to put my spare back up under the truck, I found that my factory wench was shot. It simply would not go back up. You can buy a Ford OEM hoist, but it will cost you a cool $200+. Since my truck is old, I was not keen on spending that kind of money on it. So I came to Amazon looking for hoists that "come from Chy-na" and Amazon came through as always. It actually feels well made. It is decently heavy and the cable itself looks the same size/width as the factory. I installed it today and it took me about 15 minutes. Here's the tools you will need:* 13mm socket* An impact driver (or impact wrench)* A flathead screwdriverIf you don't have an impact driver/wrench, then you can get by with a hand socket wrench (but it may take elbow grease with rusty bolts). A word of warning: when you undo the bolts and remove the old hoist, all kinds of mud, dust and rust will land right on your face, so it might not be a bad idea to wear a mask and glasses.Installation:Get your flathead and undo the "tabs" on the plastic piece that hooks into the old hoist. Once unlatched, just pull the whole plastic tube out. Next undo the two 13mm bolts. After that, pull the old hoist down (it should fit through the center hole). To install the new one, just do all those steps in reverse. It's simple. There is a good video on youtube from "TRQ" that shows exactly how to do it. The title of the video is "How to Replace Spare Tire Carrier 1997-2003 Ford F-150."The hoist comes with a warning not to lift it first, but to lower it first (in other words, you should lower it before you raise it the first time). It also says to put weight on it the first time you lower it, but since I was alone, I wasn't able to do that. I simply put my spare tire on it, then lifted it right up. The tire is snug and feels secure. We'll see how long it lasts. If anything goes wrong, I will update.

This generic brand spare tire hoist was exactly what my 1997 F150 needed when the original hoist failed after 26 years of service. The hoist is held in place by two pressure tabs and two locking bolts ad is very easy to replace. The new tire winch appears to be as good or better build quality than the original OEM Ford lift so I am hopeful it will last the life of the truck (and arguably the balance of my life)!Operation is smooth and easy in both raising the spare and a test run to be sure the spare will lower correctly. No regrets with this purchase and as long as the unit holds up reasonably well the savings are a great bonus.
