Finally some fast speeds from an external drive! Bought this for my M4Max Mac Studio and it’s a great way to add some fast storage without spending the ridiculous prices apple charges. Getting close to 3k read/write.

In hand this weighty enclosure feels like a solid slab of aluminum. Without a SSD inside, this enclosure weighs 8.75oz (249g), which is on the heavy side for a portable SSD enclosure. Most of the weight comes from the oversized aluminum construction, of course. The enclosure measures 4 7/8" long x 2 9/16" wide x 15/16" tall. The fastest SSD I have on hand to try with this enclosure is a Samsung 980 PRO NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. Unfortunately for this enclosure my 980 PRO comes with a thermal pad and thin heatsink already installed. As a result the top of the enclosure does not sit all the way down. But since this is the fastest SSD I have on hand I used it for some speed tests anyways.I have attached test results from Blackmagic and Amorphous disk speed tools run on macOS. With the 980 PRO and connected to my Mac's Thunderbolt port the average read/write speeds are what I expect to see from a USB4 enclosure with macOS, averaging approximately 24 Gbps read and 20 Gbps write. No complaints on the speed side of things!I then put in a slower SSD and installed the included thermal pad. The slow transfer speeds with this SSD are not worth documenting but with only the thermal pad on the SSD the fluted cover now closes and comes into contact with the thermal pad, becoming a big passive heatsink for the SSD. I think this design is very effective and works much better than an enclosure that does not come in contact with the thermal pad. With some sustained use I can feel heat from the enclosure. The enclosure uses 4 T6 Torx screws to hold it together. Inside is one flat head screw to keep the SSD in place. Two small screwdrivers are included with the enclosure for this reason. Seems to me it would have been more efficient for users if the enclosure used fewer screws and the same screw head, not two different ones. But then I suppose one shouldn't need to open this enclosure too often so it's not that big an issue. The enclosure also comes with a 9" USB4 cable, two sets of thermal pads and a carrying pouch.Overall this is a decent USB4 SSD enclosure. The speed is definitely there and it doubles as a big heatsink. But, it won't fit a SSD with even a thin heatsink installed and it is rather large.

So far this drive has been awesome! I recently got a new Thunderbolt 4 capable laptop and an enclosure like this is a necessary companion. With this I'm getting up to 3 GB per second so I can transfer even large files in under a minute. The speed has been true so far for me but it's dependant on what hard drive you get. One with no dram cache will slow down after a few seconds of concurrent transfers. As for heat management this little device seems to work well enough. Other TB4 drives I have are also passive cooling so I'd suppose it's not problem but it does get very very hot. This enclosure is pretty basic but effective. Considering the price that's honestly all you could ask for. Most other TB4 enclosures cost above 100 dollars and that's unreasonable when TB5 enclosures are already being released. Cost to performance ratio here is just right. If you have a capable device and need some extra storage there's no better way, and I would definitely recommend this one!

I had an unused SSD in an older laptop so I thought I'd mount it in this enclosure and use it as a backup device. My SSD fit and wired up perfectly. Most of these enclosures have a small cooling fan but this one has passive heat dissipating fins. If you run the SSD hard you can feel the enclosure warming up but so far it's been well in the safe heat range. If I had a larger drive and I ran it continuously I imagine that this enclosure might get quite hot but it's working perfectly for me.

Alright, this is a pretty awesome enclosure. It does keep the NVME drive pretty cool, but, I didn't use it for an extended time, to try to drive up the heat, but, I have had enclosures start heating up after a few transfers. The speeds are pretty good as well, make sure to use the included cable though. The cost though, I can't say this is a great value. This also isn't very good when it comes to swapping the NVME, they really need to figure a better way to do that.Things I love:Fast speedsHas not overheatedEverything includedThings I loved less:Very heavyNot a quick NVME swapNot a great valueLook, if you are looking for something for your closest techie, they will most likely love this. Most of them probably have a few NVME drives hanging around begging to be used. I personally use mine to hold images for new PC's. Just know, its expensive, but, maybe worth it?I recommend this external NVME enclosure.
