I had a spot of cement in my backyard that was scalping my mower deck. When I was finished digging it out, it was a foot and a 1/2 by a four foot cylinder of concrete. I checked at the big orange box store, and one set of stone splitting wedges are $23.After purchasing this set, I started with the 1/2" bit and you can get it to work, but the 5/8" bit allows the wedges to drop in right to the shoulder and have about an inch of the center wedge held by the O-ring. I first split the cylinder into four pieces and then the four cylinders into four quarters.A lot of splitting and the wedges worked without any mushrooming of the ends, and the O-ring design is so much easier to use than the old three wedge design.

While I never split or seen 1st hand splitting rocks before, it works. The hardest part of the job is drilling the holes. With a little trial & error, What worked for me was drill holes (3"-4" OC) with Bosch (HC5020) 5/8" SDS MAX Drill Bits (or Milwaukee) to a depth of 4" (min) using in a DeWalt Combo Hammer Drill using 50-ft 12AWG Ext. Cord w GFI outlet. To cool, lubricate & help clear (and extend service life of) the drill bit, used a garden hose with a little water very slowly trickling into/towards the dill hole. While drilling periodically, pulled to drill bit clear hole/bit & allow new clean water into drill hole. Note: the 5/8" bit has 2 carbide blades in the tip forming an X, while the 9/16" or smaller bits have only a single carbide tip which appears to make them wear out sooner. Also a 5/8" drill allow the wedge & feathers to seat deeper in the hole which appears to put the splitting force deeper within the rock (i.e. more effective). If the hole is less than 4" deep the main wedge appears to hit the bottom of the hole before full feather wedges can take effect. Overall, works well as these plug & feather wedge split well in excess of 2,000 lbs (ton) of rocks & small boulders.

These wedges worked beautifully. Make sure you drill the holes deep enough. I made the mistake of only drilling them about 3in the first time to allow the wedges to fit...didn't work. You need to drill about 5in deep holes to allow for the wedge to be hammered down past the wedges, otherwise the wedge will hit the bottom of the hole and not work properly. Once I figured this out the rock split effortlessly. The steel was strong and did not bend, the bands held up find, remember, your not beating on these, just tapping one at a time. Very important to spread out your hammer taps evenly among the wedges and the boulder will just split. Wonderful product!
